AFC Fylde secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Boston United at the Jakemans Community Stadium, with Danny Mayor’s second-half goal proving enough to earn the Coasters all three points. Boston pushed for an equaliser but their task became more difficult when Jake Rooney was dismissed for a second yellow card during the closing stages.
The opening half was closely contested, with both sides looking for opportunities without being able to find the breakthrough. Boston entered the fixture hoping to build on their impressive 3-1 victory at Forest Green Rovers, while Fylde were looking to respond after their 17-match unbeaten home league run had been ended by Altrincham the previous weekend.
The hosts picked up two yellow cards in quick succession as the first half developed, with Rooney cautioned in the 32nd minute before Tom Cursons joined him in the referee’s notebook three minutes later. Despite opportunities at both ends, neither side was able to convert and the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.
The decisive moment arrived six minutes after the restart. Chris Merrie supplied Mayor in the 51st minute and the experienced midfielder found the net to put Fylde 1-0 ahead. Merrie was then cautioned just a minute later as the intensity of the contest increased following the opening goal.
Boston responded by searching for a way back into the match, while Fylde attempted to protect their narrow advantage. Both managers turned to their benches as the second half progressed, with Boston introducing Ken Aboh for Jack Holmes in the 70th minute. Fylde made changes of their own, with Cedric Main and Luke Butterfield replacing Millar Matthews-Lewis and Merrie.
Paul Hurst continued to look for a response from his side, introducing Lenell John-Lewis for Levi Sutton in the 81st minute. However, Boston’s task became considerably more difficult three minutes later when Rooney committed another foul and received his second yellow card, reducing the Pilgrims to ten men for the remainder of the contest.
Boston nevertheless continued to search for an equaliser, with Lewis Shipley replacing Lennon Wheeldon in the 87th minute as the hosts made one final attacking change. Fylde also looked to manage the closing stages, with Greg Olley replacing goalscorer Mayor as the visitors attempted to see out their advantage.
The ten-man Pilgrims were unable to find the goal they needed and Fylde held firm through the remaining minutes to secure a 1-0 away victory. Mayor’s 51st-minute strike ultimately proved the difference, providing an immediate response to the Coasters’ defeat against Altrincham in their previous fixture.
The victory moved Fylde onto 20 points from ten National League matches and kept them among the leading sides in the division. Boston United remained on 11 points from ten games after suffering their fifth league defeat of the campaign.
