The Lamb Ground was the scene of a pulsating encounter as Tamworth and Boston United played out a 2-2 draw in the English National League. Both sides held the lead at different stages of an entertaining contest, but neither was able to find the decisive goal as the points were ultimately shared.
Tamworth drew first blood in the 23rd minute. A well-worked move saw Ben Milnes provide the assist for Kieren Donnelly, who found the back of the net to put the home side ahead. However, Tamworth’s advantage was short-lived. Boston United responded in the 32nd minute when Sai Sachdev turned provider, setting up Jamie Grimes to restore parity for the visitors. The second half began with renewed vigour from both teams. It was Tamworth who regained the lead in the 53rd minute. Kieren Donnelly, who had opened the scoring, turned creator this time, laying on a pass for Morgan Roberts to fire home and put the hosts back in front at 2-1.
Boston United again refused to allow Tamworth to take control of the match. With the visitors looking for a response, Lenell John-Lewis was introduced from the bench in the 60th minute, and the substitution had an almost immediate impact. Just three minutes later, John-Lewis found the net to make it 2-2, with Sai Sachdev providing his second assist of the afternoon.
Having twice surrendered the lead, Tamworth looked to regain the initiative, while Boston sensed an opportunity to complete a turnaround of their own. The game became increasingly open as the second half progressed, with both sides pushing for a winner rather than settling immediately for a point.
The closing stages were competitive and increasingly physical as neither team was willing to concede ground. Referee Scott Jackson had a busy afternoon, issuing yellow cards to Tamworth’s Luke Fairlamb and Kieren Donnelly, while Boston United’s Terrell Agyemang, Jordan Cullinane-Liburd and Niall Canavan also entered the referee’s notebook.
Despite both teams continuing to search for a decisive breakthrough, neither could find a third goal. Tamworth were left to reflect on having surrendered the lead twice, while Boston could take encouragement from twice responding after falling behind and ending their run of two consecutive league defeats.
The draw moves Tamworth onto five points from six games, with one win, two draws and three defeats, leaving them 17th in the English National League standings. Boston United move onto seven points from their six fixtures, having recorded two wins, one draw and three defeats, and sit in 12th place. Both sides will take positives from an entertaining contest, although each will also feel there was an opportunity to claim all three points.
