In a hard-fought encounter at Hornchurch Stadium, Forest Green Rovers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Hornchurch in their English National League fixture. The decisive moment arrived early in the first half, and despite sustained pressure from the home side as the match progressed, the visitors held firm to claim all three points.
The deadlock was broken in the eighth minute when Sean Etaluku made progress down the left before delivering a cross into Ricardo Rees. The Forest Green striker’s effort took a deflection before finding the back of the net, giving the visitors an early advantage and ending their recent run without a victory.
Hornchurch, who had entered the fixture in third place with 12 points from five games, looked to respond after falling behind. They were shown two yellow cards in the first half, with Henry Hearn cautioned in the 20th minute and Josh Walker following in the 30th. The home side also made an early change, introducing Henry Sandat for Hearn in the 25th minute as they sought a route back into the contest.
The second half developed into a tactical battle as Forest Green looked to protect their slender advantage and Hornchurch pushed for an equaliser. Jayden Clarke was booked for the visitors in the 61st minute, while Henry Sandat received a caution for Hornchurch in the 74th as the intensity increased.
Both teams made further adjustments in the closing stages. Forest Green introduced Kairo Mitchell and Oliver Ewing in the 78th minute, while Hornchurch turned to their bench in search of a breakthrough, bringing on Bobby Kelman, Aaron Rowe and Asher Yearwood.
Hornchurch continued to press and came agonisingly close to levelling the match in the 87th minute. Sam Ling found himself with an opportunity to score, but Forest Green goalkeeper Ethan Ross produced an excellent save to preserve the visitors’ lead. At the other end, Hornchurch goalkeeper Arthur Nasta was also called upon to make an important stop as Forest Green searched for a second.
Despite the late pressure, Hornchurch could not find the equaliser and Ricardo Rees’ eighth-minute goal ultimately proved decisive. Forest Green defended resolutely through the closing stages to secure a valuable 1-0 away victory and bring their three-match losing run to an end.
The result sees Forest Green Rovers move onto nine points from six league matches after recording their third victory of the campaign. Hornchurch remain on 12 points after six games, suffering only their second defeat of the season and their first home league loss of the campaign.
