In a hard-fought encounter at the EBB Stadium, Aldershot Town secured a vital 1-0 victory over FC Halifax Town, with a solitary goal late in the second half proving decisive. The win, courtesy of Marcus Wyllie’s strike in the 80th minute, lifts the Shots and deals a blow to the Shaymen’s recent momentum.
The opening exchanges were cagey, as is often the case in National League fixtures where fine margins can dictate outcomes. Both sides probed for weaknesses, but clear-cut chances were at a premium. FC Halifax Town, looking to build on their midweek victory over Hartlepool United, showed early intent, but Aldershot Town’s defence stood firm.
The first real moment of note arrived in the 24th minute when Cody Johnson of FC Halifax Town was shown a yellow card for a foul. Three minutes later, Aldershot had a golden opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot, but Tristan Abrahams saw his effort saved by True Grant. The second half began with a renewed sense of urgency from both teams. Aldershot Town, perhaps sensing an opportunity, began to press higher up the pitch. FC Halifax Town responded with further changes in the 64th minute, introducing Ben Tollitt and David Kawa as they looked to break the deadlock.
The game remained goalless and tightly contested for much of the second period. However, Aldershot’s substitutions ultimately proved decisive as the home side continued to search for a breakthrough.
The breakthrough arrived in the 80th minute. Substitute Marcus Wyllie found the net for Aldershot Town after good work from fellow substitutes Brody Peart and Alfonso Tenconi-Gradillas. The strike, coming so late in the game, sent the home crowd into raptures and left FC Halifax Town with little time to respond.
Despite their efforts to find an equaliser, FC Halifax Town could not break down a resolute Aldershot Town defence in the remaining minutes. The Shots saw out the game to secure a crucial three points.
The victory continues Aldershot Town’s strong start to the season and extends their unbeaten run to four league matches. After the completion of Matchday 6, the Shots sit ninth with 11 points from six games. FC Halifax Town, meanwhile, remain on six points and drop to 17th after suffering their fourth defeat of the campaign.
