In a pulsating encounter at The New Lawn, Forest Green Rovers secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over FC Halifax Town, a match that defied expectations with its sheer goal-scoring spectacle. The home side, after weathering an early storm, found their rhythm to net three times in the second half, only for the visitors to mount a spirited late comeback that ultimately fell just short.
The tone for a goal-laden afternoon was set early on. FC Halifax Town drew first blood in the ninth minute when Will Flint found the back of the net, giving the visitors a deserved lead. With the score at 3-1, Forest Green Rovers appeared to be cruising to victory.
However, FC Halifax Town demonstrated commendable resilience. In a frantic finish, Zak Gilsenan pulled one back for the visitors in the 95th minute, setting up a nail-biting finale. Despite a flurry of late substitutions from both sides in an attempt to influence the outcome, Halifax could not find the equaliser, leaving Forest Green Rovers to celebrate a hard-fought, albeit narrow, victory.
The win sees Forest Green Rovers solidify their position, having already qualified for the playoffs. They currently sit in sixth place in the English National League with three points after their opening fixture. FC Halifax Town, also playoff-qualified, remain on zero points after their opening game, placing them sixteenth in the league standings. This high-scoring affair, while ultimately ending in defeat for the visitors, showcased the attacking intent that both teams possess as they look ahead to the remainder of the season and the challenges of the playoffs.
