In a pulsating encounter at the Marcy Fitness Stadium, AFC Fylde secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Harrogate Town in the English National League. The match, which swung dramatically in the latter stages, saw Fylde’s substitutes make a decisive impact, turning a tense stalemate into an important away win.
The first half was a cagey affair with few clear-cut chances as both sides probed for an opening but the defences held firm. Millar Matthews-Lewis of Fylde received the game’s first yellow card in the 32nd minute for a foul, followed by Morgan Williams of Harrogate Town four minutes later. The deadlock remained unbroken as the teams headed into the interval.
The second half continued in a similar vein until the 58th minute when Fylde introduced Corey Whelan in place of Theo Upton, a tactical switch that would prove inspired. Danny Mayor was then introduced in the 69th minute as the visitors looked for a way to break the deadlock.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute when Whelan, who had been on the pitch for just over 20 minutes, found the net to put Fylde 1-0 ahead. The substitute’s impact proved crucial as the visitors finally found a way through a Harrogate side that had entered the match on the back of three consecutive league victories.
Just five minutes later, Fylde doubled their advantage. Millar Matthews-Lewis, who had been booked during the first half, turned provider as Luca Thomas found the net to make it 2-0 and put the visitors firmly in control heading into the closing stages.
Harrogate Town, however, refused to lie down. The home side rallied and their own substitute, Ellis Taylor, who had been introduced in the 80th minute, pulled a goal back in the 87th minute. The late strike reduced the deficit to 2-1 and set up a frantic finale as Harrogate searched for an equaliser.
Despite a late surge from the hosts, Fylde held firm to secure all three points and bring Harrogate’s three-match winning run to an end. The result also extended Fylde’s own unbeaten sequence to five National League matches, during which they have recorded four victories and a draw since their 3-2 defeat at Woking in August.
The victory moved Fylde onto 17 points from their opening eight matches, with a record of five wins, two draws and one defeat. Harrogate Town remained on 16 points after suffering only their second league defeat of the campaign, having won five, drawn one and lost two of their first eight fixtures. Fylde’s impressive run continued following their emphatic 4-1 victory at Yeovil Town in their previous outing, while Harrogate will look to respond after seeing their strong sequence of victories over Gateshead, Scunthorpe United and Tamworth brought to an end.
