Roots Hall played host to a compelling encounter as Southend United emerged victorious with a 3-1 win against Tamworth in the English National League. After a goalless first half, the Shrimpers took control following four substitutions at the interval, with all three of their goals arriving during an action-packed second period.
The opening period was a competitive affair, with Southend creating the greater number of opportunities without finding a breakthrough. The hosts thought they had taken the lead in the 11th minute when Leon Chambers-Parillon’s effort came back off the post and Harry Cardwell converted the rebound, but the flag had already been raised for offside. Ben Goodliffe later saw a header cleared off the line, while Tamworth also threatened and came close to opening the scoring shortly before the interval when Ryan Howley’s curling effort narrowly missed the target.
Southend United manager Kieron Dyer made a bold tactical intervention at half-time, introducing Promise Omochere, Zavier Massiah-Edwards, Lewys Twamley and Sam Austin in place of Harry Cardwell, Josh Popoola, Sahid Kamara and Anthony Hartigan. The changes immediately injected greater energy into the home side, with Omochere forcing Jas Singh into a close-range save before Twamley and Massiah-Edwards also threatened.
The breakthrough finally occurred in the 60th minute. Following another spell of Southend pressure, Darren Oldaker showed quick feet to advance into the penalty area before laying the ball into the path of Leon Chambers-Parillon, who calmly found the far corner. It was Chambers-Parillon’s third goal in as many matches and gave the home side a deserved 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, Southend extended their advantage. Kyle McAdam delivered from the left and Promise Omochere attacked the cross with a diving header, guiding the ball beyond Singh to make it 2-0. The substitute’s impact provided further vindication for Dyer’s decision to make four changes at the interval.
Tamworth, however, refused to concede defeat and responded almost immediately. Nathan Tshikuna created the opportunity himself, driving into the right side of the penalty area before unleashing a powerful effort beyond Joe Duncan from a tight angle to reduce the deficit to 2-1. The goal gave the visitors renewed hope and ensured Southend’s advantage remained precarious heading into the closing stages.
Tamworth manager Andy Peaks responded with three substitutions in the 74th minute, introducing Jake Hutchinson, Joe Rye and Olly Dyson for Dan Creaney, Haydn Hollis and Ryan Howley respectively. Teo Kurtaran followed shortly afterwards in place of TJ Bramble as the visitors attempted to find an equaliser.
The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Tamworth failed to properly clear a Southend corner, allowing the ball to drop invitingly for Sam Austin, who struck a powerful volley into the roof of the net from around 12 yards to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion and score his first goal of the season. The strike effectively extinguished Tamworth’s hopes of completing a comeback.
Southend managed the closing stages professionally to secure all three points and extend their unbeaten National League run to four matches, following a draw at Woking, victory over Yeovil Town and a draw at Carlisle United. The victory lifted Kieron Dyer’s side to third place on 17 points, level with leaders AFC Fylde and second-placed Boreham Wood at the conclusion of the night’s fixtures. Tamworth, meanwhile, remained near the foot of the table after extending their winless league run to four matches. The attendance at Roots Hall was 7,328, including 27 travelling Tamworth supporters.
