In a hard-fought encounter at Grosvenor Vale, FC Halifax Town secured a crucial 1-0 away victory against Wealdstone, with a solitary goal from Amari Morgan-Smith in the 58th minute proving decisive. The English National League clash, officiated by James Oldham, saw both sides battling for supremacy, but it was the visitors who ultimately found the breakthrough to take all three points and record their first away league victory of the season.
The first half began as a cagey affair, with neither side able to establish clear dominance. Wealdstone produced the first notable opportunity in the sixth minute when Dan Chesters cut inside onto his right foot and fired towards goal, but his effort lacked the power and accuracy required to trouble True Grant. The visitors were then forced into an early change in the 17th minute when Zak Gilsenan went down injured and was replaced by Will Hugill.
As the first half progressed, the game remained goalless, with both teams probing for openings but struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Halifax threatened in the 25th minute when Connor Douglas produced good work out wide before attempting to cut the ball back, but he was unable to find a teammate. Neither side could make the breakthrough before the interval, leaving everything to play for in the second period.
The second half saw changes from both sides during the interval. Halifax manager John McGrath introduced Amari Morgan-Smith in place of Conor Carty, while Wealdstone brought on Tarryn Allarakhia Newton for Jayden Mundle-Smith. Morgan-Smith’s introduction would prove to be the decisive move of the evening.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute. Will Hugill raced onto a through-ball and saw his initial effort saved by Wealdstone goalkeeper Dante Baptiste, but Halifax kept the attack alive. Ben Tollitt subsequently picked out Morgan-Smith, who steered the ball home from close range to score his first goal for the Shaymen and give the visitors the lead.
Wealdstone responded by making several substitutions as they sought an equaliser. In the 65th minute, Olufela Olomola was replaced by Wilson Waweru, Dylan Kadji made way for Mason Barrett and Dan Chesters was substituted for Aaron Henry. Jack Cook was then replaced by Amaru Kaunda in the 72nd minute as Gary Waddock continued to search for a way back into the contest.
Halifax looked to protect their slender advantage while remaining a threat going forward. Ben Tollitt was replaced by Deniche Hill in the 78th minute, and the visitors came close to doubling their lead in the closing stages when Cody Johnson tried his luck from outside the penalty area, forcing Baptiste into a good save. The closing minutes also saw bookings for Wealdstone’s Kyle Smith and Halifax’s Deniche Hill.
Despite their late efforts, Wealdstone were unable to find the crucial goal to salvage a point. Halifax held firm to secure a narrow 1-0 victory, with Morgan-Smith’s first goal for the club proving decisive. The result gave the Shaymen their first away victory of the National League campaign and made it three league wins from their last four matches, while Wealdstone remained without a home league victory after four attempts.
