The Jakemans Community Stadium witnessed a hard-fought contest as Boston United and Woking played out a 1-1 draw in the English National League. The hosts led for much of the encounter following an early Terrell Agyemang goal, but substitute Josh Kelly struck in the second half to earn Woking a share of the points.
Boston United enjoyed an encouraging start, taking the lead within the opening six minutes. A well-executed move culminated in Terrell Agyemang finding the back of the net from the centre of the penalty area, following an assist from Connor McBride. The early breakthrough gave the home side an ideal platform as they looked to end their recent winless run.
Woking gradually found their way back into the game as the first half progressed, searching for opportunities to test the Boston defence. Despite their efforts, they were unable to find an equaliser before the interval, with the Pilgrims taking their slender 1-0 advantage into half-time.
The second half saw Woking continue to search for a way back into the contest. Boston made the first substitution of the evening in the 60th minute, with Lennon Wheeldon replacing Connor McBride. Five minutes later, Woking responded with a triple change as manager Craig Ross introduced Aiden O’Brien, Jake Forster-Caskey and Josh Kelly in place of Tim Akinola, Steven Turner and Liam Dulson respectively.
Those changes proved decisive in the 73rd minute. Jaiden Putman provided the opportunity for substitute Josh Kelly, who found the back of the net just eight minutes after his introduction to level the scores at 1-1. The goal rewarded Woking’s persistence and left Boston facing a battle to restore their advantage during the closing stages.
Boston had made two further changes immediately before the equaliser, with Tom Cursons replacing Ken Aboh and Lewis Shipley coming on for Oliver Bostock in the 72nd minute. Following Kelly’s goal, the match became a tense affair as both teams searched for a decisive breakthrough, but neither was able to find the second goal required to take all three points.
Referee Richard Aspinall issued three yellow cards during the second half. Boston’s Oliver Bostock was cautioned in the 56th minute, Woking substitute Aiden O’Brien entered the book in the 75th minute and Nicholas Pozo was shown a yellow card for the hosts in the 83rd.
Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages and the final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw. The result extended Boston United’s winless league run to five matches, although it represented an improvement following their 3-1 home defeat against Wealdstone. Woking, meanwhile, followed their emphatic 5-1 victory over Altrincham with another positive result on the road.
The point left the two sides level on eight points after eight National League matches, with Woking occupying 17th place and Boston United immediately behind them in 18th. For Boston, the draw also continued an unusual recent sequence against Woking, with the last three league meetings between the clubs all ending level.
