Harrogate Town secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Tamworth at the Marcy Fitness Stadium, recovering from an early setback to deliver a strong attacking performance. The hosts fell behind inside six minutes but responded with three unanswered goals to claim all three points and continue their impressive start to the English National League season.
Tamworth made the perfect start in the sixth minute. After Kieren Donnelly drove forward and the Harrogate defence failed to clear the danger, the ball fell invitingly to Ben Milnes around 20 yards from goal. The Tamworth captain struck a low effort that went in off the post, silencing the home crowd and giving the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.
Harrogate responded quickly and began to apply sustained pressure. Bailey Hobson had already threatened before finding the equaliser in the 16th minute. Josh Hmami helped create the opening, allowing Hobson to break through the Tamworth back line before angling his finish beyond Jas Singh and inside the far post to restore parity.
The hosts continued to carry the greater attacking threat as the first half progressed. Shawn McCoulsky went close with a header, while Will McGowan appealed for a penalty after going down under a challenge from TJ Bramble, but referee Dean Watson was unmoved.
Harrogate eventually completed the turnaround in the 42nd minute. Lewis Cass provided the assist for Will McGowan, who found the back of the net to put the hosts 2-1 ahead. The goal ensured Simon Weaver’s side went into the interval with a deserved advantage after responding strongly to Tamworth’s early opener.
The competitive nature of the contest was reflected in several first-half bookings. Morgan Roberts and Dan Creaney were cautioned for Tamworth, while Morgan Williams and Shawn McCoulsky both entered the referee’s notebook for Harrogate.
Tamworth made changes as they looked for a response, with Riccardo Calder having replaced Luke Fairlamb in the first half before Thomas McGlinchey and Ryan Howley were introduced shortly after the hour mark. However, Harrogate struck again before the substitutions could alter the momentum of the game.
In the 63rd minute, McGowan collected possession in midfield and released Hmami inside the penalty area. Hmami made no mistake, producing a composed low finish beyond Singh to extend Harrogate’s lead to 3-1 and give the hosts a valuable two-goal cushion.
Harrogate continued to create opportunities after the third goal. McGowan tested Singh again before Ethan Bristow was released into the area, while Tamworth survived another scare when Singh misjudged a punch from a corner and Jordan Cullinane-Liburd cleared the loose ball off the line.
Both managers used their benches during the closing stages. Harrogate introduced Michael Craig, George Thomson, Ciaran McGuckin, Brad Dolaghan and Ellis Taylor as they looked to manage their advantage, while Tamworth brought on Olly Dyson and Nathan Tshikuna in search of a route back into the match. Warren Burrell was cautioned for Harrogate in the 51st minute, with Tshikuna and Joseph Rye also booked late on for the visitors.
Tamworth continued to compete and Dan Creaney headed a late free-kick off target during seven minutes of stoppage time, but Harrogate remained comfortable and saw out the remainder of the match to secure a deserved 3-1 victory.
The result moves Harrogate Town onto 16 points from seven games, with five wins, one draw and one defeat, leaving them second in the English National League after Saturday’s fixtures. They have now won three consecutive league matches and remain firmly among the early pace-setters.
Tamworth, meanwhile, remain on five points from seven games after one win, two draws and four defeats, dropping to 22nd place. Having taken an early lead at Harrogate, the Lambs will be frustrated that they were unable to build on their strong opening and will need to find greater consistency as they look to climb the table.
