A late equaliser at the Silverlake Stadium saw Eastleigh fight back to earn a deserved 1-1 draw against National League leaders Boreham Wood. The visitors looked set to claim another victory after Charlie O’Connell broke the deadlock midway through the second half, but Temi Eweka struck six minutes from time to preserve Eastleigh’s unbeaten home record.
Eastleigh were forced into a late change before kick-off when goalkeeper Nick Townsend pulled up during the warm-up, handing Josh Jeffries his National League debut. Boreham Wood began the stronger of the two sides and enjoyed much of the early possession, but the Spitfires remained organised and looked dangerous when opportunities arose on the counter.
The visitors created the first notable opening after 21 minutes when Tarryn Allarakhia cut inside and struck towards goal, only for Temi Eweka to produce an important sliding block. Eastleigh responded with a chance of their own shortly afterwards, as Nick Akoto and Nelson Khumbeni combined down the right before Khumbeni’s effort was blocked narrowly wide.
Eastleigh continued to threaten despite seeing less of the ball. Josh Lundstram went close shortly before half-time when a dangerous delivery from Khumbeni flicked off his knee and looped just over the crossbar. Boreham Wood’s attacking threats were largely kept quiet during the opening 45 minutes, and the sides went into the interval goalless.
Boreham Wood made a change at half-time, with Jay Bird replacing Matt Rush, and the visitors began the second period with renewed purpose. Bird dragged an effort wide shortly after the restart before Allarakhia missed a major opportunity from close range following good work between himself and Zak Brunt.
The league leaders continued to apply pressure and came close again in the 63rd minute. Jeffries punched away a cross, but James Clarke reacted quickly to the loose ball and sent an effort towards goal that Tommy Dobson-Ventura was forced to head off the line.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 67th minute. Regan Booty provided the assist from a free-kick, with Charlie O’Connell rising at the back post to power a header home and give Boreham Wood a 1-0 lead.
Eastleigh refused to let the game slip away. With 12 minutes remaining, manager Matt Gray made a triple substitution, introducing Hady Ghandour, Dion Rankine and Will Randall-Hurren as the Spitfires pushed for an equaliser.
The changes helped increase the pressure on the Boreham Wood defence, and Eastleigh were rewarded in the 84th minute. A corner created uncertainty inside the area and Eweka reacted quickest, stabbing the ball home from close range to level the scores at 1-1.
The equaliser shifted the momentum once more, and Eastleigh nearly completed the turnaround in added time. Aaron Blair broke through the Boreham Wood defence and sent a looping effort towards goal that almost caught Luca Gunter out, but the visitors survived and the final whistle confirmed a share of the points.
The draw preserves Boreham Wood’s unbeaten start to the English National League season and keeps them top of the table with 17 points from seven matches, having won five and drawn two. Eastleigh move onto 11 points from seven games and sit 11th, while also maintaining their unbeaten league record at the Silverlake Stadium this season.
