Solihull Moors suffered a cruel late defeat at Damson Park as Aldershot Town came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory. The hosts created the majority of the chances and looked well placed to claim their first league win of the season, only for a Brody Peart equaliser and a stoppage-time own goal to turn the contest on its head.
Solihull began strongly and immediately put the Aldershot defence under pressure. Jacob Wakeling forced an early save from Jonathan Macaulay before Scott High and Joe Sbarra also threatened as the Moors repeatedly found space in attacking areas. Tyrell Warren tested Macaulay from the right as the home side continued to create the better opportunities.
The hosts were handed a major chance to take the lead midway through the first half when Jevon Mills was pulled down inside the area and referee Steven Copeland pointed to the penalty spot. Ben Wodskou stepped up, but Macaulay guessed correctly and produced an excellent save to deny him. High’s effort from the rebound was then blocked as Aldershot survived.
Aldershot struggled to establish themselves during much of the opening period and collected three yellow cards, with Tyrese Dyce, Michael Stickland and Tristan Abrahams all cautioned. Abrahams was booked for simulation after going down inside the Solihull area.
Solihull finally received the reward their first-half performance deserved in the 44th minute. Jamie Andrews won possession in midfield and released Wodskou, who drove into the area before firing low across Macaulay and into the far corner. Having earlier missed from the penalty spot, the striker made amends to give the Moors a 1-0 lead heading into the interval.
Aldershot responded decisively at half-time, making three substitutions as Marcus Dinanga, Alfonso Tenconi and Elijah Oladunjoye replaced Tristan Abrahams, Tyrese Dyce and Marcus Wyllie. The changes gave the visitors greater energy, although Solihull continued to create opportunities and remained the more threatening side for long spells.
Wodskou was forced off through injury in the 56th minute and was replaced by Callum McFarlane. Solihull continued to push for a second goal, with Jamie Andrews going close and Alex Whitmore seeing a powerful effort deflected over as the hosts looked to give themselves breathing room.
Aldershot made further changes in the 71st and 72nd minutes, introducing Brody Peart and Jordan Alves. The impact was immediate. Within moments of entering the game, Peart collected the ball after good work from Marcus Dinanga, drove forward into space and fired a left-footed effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
The equaliser came against the general flow of the match, and Solihull attempted to regain their advantage. Sbarra delivered another dangerous ball towards Andrews, while the hosts continued to threaten from long throws and set-pieces. However, the second goal would not come.
With the game appearing destined to finish level, Aldershot produced a dramatic final twist in the second minute of stoppage time. Jordan Alves whipped a dangerous corner towards the near post and goalkeeper Max Metcalfe misjudged the delivery while attempting to claim it. The ball spilled from his grasp and marginally crossed the line, resulting in a devastating own goal and handing Aldershot a 2-1 lead with virtually no time remaining.
The final whistle followed shortly afterwards, confirming a deeply frustrating defeat for Solihull Moors after a performance in which they had created the majority of the opportunities. The hosts had missed a penalty, led at half-time and remained on top for significant periods, only to leave the match empty-handed after two late goals.
The victory extends Aldershot Town’s unbeaten league run to five matches and moves them onto 14 points from seven games, leaving the Shots sixth in the English National League after Saturday’s fixtures. Solihull Moors remain bottom of the table in 24th place with one point from seven matches and are still searching for their first league victory of the season.
