Huish Park was the scene of a high-scoring encounter as AFC Fylde secured an impressive 4-1 victory over Yeovil Town in the English National League. The visitors demonstrated clinical finishing at key moments, with Greg Olley and Luca Thomas both scoring twice to punish a Yeovil side that created opportunities of their own but were unable to match Fylde’s efficiency in front of goal.
Yeovil actually made a positive start and looked threatening down the right through Archie Davies and Ryan Jones. Luke McCormick also found himself in a promising position after a well-weighted pass from Ben Radcliffe, while Brett McGavin fired wide following a partially cleared corner as the hosts searched for an early breakthrough.
Fylde, however, struck first in the 35th minute. Harvey Broad made progress down the left before finding Greg Olley, whose effort found the net off the crossbar to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The goal came after a relatively even opening period and gave Fylde an important foothold in the contest.
Yeovil responded strongly and came close to equalising before the interval. McCormick’s cross eventually found McGavin inside the area, but his effort was blocked, before Archie Davies produced a driving run into the box and saw his shot come back off the post.
That missed opportunity proved costly. In first-half stoppage time, substitute Millar Matthews-Lewis released Luca Thomas behind the Yeovil defence. Thomas beat the offside trap and prodded the ball beyond Jos Barker to double Fylde’s advantage in the 45+1st minute, sending the visitors into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Yeovil made a double change at half-time, introducing Slavi Spasov and Johl Powell as they looked to find a route back into the match. However, Fylde almost added a third immediately when Matthews-Lewis broke through on goal, only for Barker to stand tall and deny him.
The third goal was not long in coming. In the 51st minute, Thomas struck again from the edge of the area, with his effort taking a significant deflection before dropping beyond Barker and into the net. Greg Olley was credited with the assist as Fylde moved into a commanding 3-0 lead.
Yeovil refused to give up and continued to make attacking changes. Joe Gubbins, Charlie Lennon and Zain Westbrooke were introduced as the Glovers attempted to change the momentum, while Barker prevented Thomas from completing a hat-trick with a sharp save at his near post.
The home side finally received some reward for their attacking efforts in the 75th minute. Ryan Jones drove forward down the right before finding Luke McCormick on the edge of the area. The Yeovil captain took a touch and curled an excellent finish beyond goalkeeper Zac Jones to reduce the deficit to 3-1 and give the home crowd some hope.
Any prospect of a late comeback lasted only five minutes. In the 80th minute, Greg Olley broke clear of the Yeovil defence, rounded Barker and calmly rolled the ball into the empty net for his second goal of the afternoon. Tom Whelan was credited with the assist as Fylde restored their three-goal advantage and effectively settled the contest.
Yeovil continued to push forward during the closing stages, with Charlie Lennon firing narrowly wide following a strong run, but Fylde managed the remaining minutes comfortably to complete a convincing away victory.
The final whistle confirmed a 4-1 win for AFC Fylde, who were particularly ruthless in front of goal. Yeovil actually recorded more shots and a higher expected-goals figure, but the visitors made far better use of their opportunities, with braces from Olley and Thomas proving decisive.
The victory moves Fylde onto 14 points from seven games, with four wins, two draws and one defeat, leaving them third in the English National League after Saturday’s fixtures. They are now unbeaten in four league matches and continue an impressive start to the campaign.
Yeovil Town remain on 11 points from seven games and sit tenth after suffering their second consecutive league defeat. The Glovers can take some encouragement from the chances they created, but conceding four goals at Huish Park represents a significant setback after their strong opening to the season.
