Scunthorpe United secured an impressive 2-0 away victory over Sutton United at the Borough Sports Ground, with goals from Kyle Hurst and substitute Tyrell Sellars-Fleming condemning the hosts to a third consecutive league defeat. The Lincolnshire side produced a disciplined performance and took their opportunities when they arrived to claim a valuable three points.
The opening stages were relatively even, with Sutton initially enjoying some promising moments. Dan Urpens’ long throws caused problems for the Scunthorpe defence, while Will Nightingale forced goalkeeper Maison Campbell into a save with a header. Brandon Njoku also looked lively, combining with Charlie Carter as the hosts searched for an early breakthrough.
Scunthorpe carried a threat of their own. A defensive mistake allowed Declan Howe an opportunity inside the area, although Alex Kirk produced an important block, while Luke Brennan also saw an effort deflected behind as the visitors began to create openings.
The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute in spectacular fashion. After Sutton goalkeeper Spike Brits punched away Kyle Hurst’s initial delivery, Joe Starbuck’s follow-up effort was blocked. The loose ball fell to Hurst on the edge of the penalty area and he struck a superb volley into the top corner to give Scunthorpe a 1-0 lead.
Sutton responded before the interval and came close to an equaliser when Ben Brookes delivered a dangerous cross from the right. The ball glanced off Joe Rowley and looked destined for goal, but Campbell reacted brilliantly to tip it over the bar and preserve Scunthorpe’s advantage heading into half-time.
The visitors threatened again shortly after the restart, with Luke Brennan testing Brits from distance. Sutton continued to search for a route back into the contest and were handed their best opportunity when a high press allowed Jake Taylor to win possession and release Joe Knight. Knight played Njoku through on goal, but Campbell came out quickly to make a crucial save.
The game became increasingly physical as the second half progressed. Emmanuel Osadebe was booked for Sutton before Branden Horton was cautioned moments later for Scunthorpe. The visitors then made a triple substitution in the 63rd minute, introducing Alfie Beestin, Tyler Denton and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming for Hurst, Horton and Howe.
Those changes proved decisive. Sutton continued to push for an equaliser, with Carter heading into Campbell’s hands and David Ogbonna firing across goal, but Scunthorpe struck again in the 69th minute. Denton’s delivery was diverted into the path of Sellars-Fleming, who drove a low finish beyond Brits to double the visitors’ advantage.
Scunthorpe remained the more composed side after the second goal and continued to threaten. Will Evans saw a header blocked following a corner, while the visitors used further substitutions to manage the closing stages. Sutton introduced Sam Folarin, Jermaine Francis and Charlie Bell as they attempted to find a way back into the match, but the Scunthorpe defence remained organised.
The hosts continued to search for a consolation in the closing minutes, with Ogbonna seeing another effort diverted wide, but Campbell and the defence in front of him preserved the clean sheet. At the other end, Alfie Beestin even attempted an ambitious effort from near the halfway line after spotting Brits off his line, although it drifted wide.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 victory for Scunthorpe United and their first away league win of the season. Kyle Hurst’s superb first-half volley gave the visitors the platform before Sellars-Fleming’s second-half strike put the result beyond Sutton.
The victory moves Scunthorpe United onto seven points from seven matches and up to 18th place in the English National League table. Sutton United remain on 12 points and drop to ninth after suffering a third consecutive league defeat. Having won their opening four matches, the U’s have now endured a difficult run, while Scunthorpe will take considerable encouragement from a controlled away performance and clean sheet.
