The Sussex Transport Community Stadium was the scene of a pulsating 2-2 draw between Worthing and Barrow in the English National League. Barrow established a two-goal first-half lead through a brace from debutant Mikey Lane, before Dominic Hutchinson struck twice after the interval to complete an impressive Worthing comeback.
Worthing made the brighter start and created the first notable opportunity when Ricky Aguiar tested Barrow goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom from distance. However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Mikey Lane worked his way into the penalty area and, after his initial effort was partially stopped, reacted quickest to convert the rebound and score his first goal for Barrow.
Worthing were forced into an early change when Jose Marquez suffered a head injury, with Charley Kendall introduced in his place around the half-hour mark. The substitute quickly made an impact, forcing Winterbottom into a save as the hosts searched for an equaliser.
Instead, Barrow struck again in first-half stoppage time. Lane capitalised on a defensive mistake outside the Worthing area, collected the loose ball and calmly finished beyond Taylor Seymour to score his second of the afternoon and send the visitors into the interval with a 2-0 advantage.
Worthing emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and quickly reduced the deficit. In the 50th minute, Kendall played the ball into the path of Dominic Hutchinson, who advanced into the area before delicately lifting his finish over Winterbottom to make it 2-1.
The hosts continued to build momentum, although they survived a scare when goalkeeper Seymour ventured well outside his area and lost possession. Ricky Aguiar deliberately halted Lane before the Barrow forward could attempt a long-range effort towards an unguarded goal, earning himself a yellow card but preventing a potentially decisive third for the visitors.
Worthing’s pressure was rewarded again in the 61st minute. Kendall once more provided the pass, finding Hutchinson in space behind the Barrow defence. The midfielder kept his composure and placed a low finish beyond Winterbottom to complete his brace and bring the scores level at 2-2.
With the momentum now firmly behind the hosts, Barrow were forced into a more defensive approach for much of the remainder of the second half. Both managers made changes, with Innes Cameron and Thierry Latty-Fairweather among those introduced for the visitors, while Harry Ransom replaced Ricky Aguiar for Worthing.
The match remained competitive, with several players entering referee Abigail Byrne’s notebook. Danny Amos, Isaac Marriott, MJ Williams, Kennedy Digie and Paul Kalambayi were all cautioned for Barrow, while Aguiar was booked for Worthing.
Both sides had opportunities to win the match in a frantic conclusion. Substitute Seb Thompson forced Seymour into a good low save for Barrow as the visitors threatened to regain the lead. Worthing then broke rapidly at the other end, with Kendall played through on goal, but Winterbottom spread himself well to deny the substitute and preserve the draw.
The final whistle confirmed a point apiece after a genuine game of two halves. Barrow will take encouragement from Lane’s impressive debut brace but may be frustrated to have surrendered a two-goal advantage, while Worthing showed considerable resilience to fight their way back into the contest after trailing at the interval.
After Saturday’s full programme, Worthing sit 16th in the English National League with eight points from seven matches, while Barrow are 21st with six points. The draw extends Worthing’s unbeaten league run to three games, while Barrow have now taken four points from their last two fixtures after securing their first victory of the season against Sutton United the previous weekend.
