Brunton Park played host to a pulsating encounter as Carlisle United and Southend United battled to a dramatic 2-2 draw in the English National League. The match produced an extraordinary finish, with three goals arriving from the 83rd minute onwards as both sides appeared at different stages to have secured all three points.
Carlisle United made the perfect start, taking the lead in the fourth minute. David Ajiboye delivered the ball into the area for Georgie Kelly, who converted from close range to put the Cumbrians ahead. The early breakthrough gave Carlisle confidence, and the hosts enjoyed the better of much of the opening period.
Southend United gradually worked their way into the contest but found clear opportunities difficult to create against an organised Carlisle defence. For much of the second half, Carlisle appeared capable of protecting their advantage. Southend continued to push forward, however, and their persistence was finally rewarded in the 83rd minute. Substitute Promise Omochere provided the assist for Leon Chambers-Parillon, who fired home to level the scores at 1-1.
The equaliser transformed the closing stages. Southend suddenly sensed an opportunity to complete the turnaround, and in the second minute of stoppage time they did just that. Kyle McAdam found the back of the net to put the Shrimpers 2-1 ahead, seemingly completing a remarkable late comeback.
Carlisle, however, refused to accept defeat. Deep into stoppage time, the hosts launched one final attack. In the 96th minute, Morgan Feeney provided the assist for Georgie Kelly, who scored his second goal of the match from inside the area to make it 2-2 and rescue a point for the Cumbrians with virtually the final action of the game.
The dramatic finale continued an afternoon in which the momentum repeatedly shifted between the two teams. Southend had been only moments away from claiming an impressive away victory after trailing for almost 80 minutes, while Carlisle showed considerable resilience to respond after conceding twice late on.
The draw leaves Southend United in fifth place in the English National League with 14 points from seven games, having recorded four wins, two draws and one defeat. Carlisle United move onto nine points from seven fixtures and sit 12th in the table, with two wins, three draws and two losses. For Southend, there will be frustration at conceding so late after appearing to complete the comeback, while Carlisle can take encouragement from rescuing a point in dramatic fashion.
