Barrow produced an impressive second-half performance to defeat Southend United 4-2 at Roots Hall, with all six goals arriving after the interval. Rekeem Harper and Seb Thompson established a two-goal advantage before Southend twice threatened a comeback, but the visitors responded on each occasion to secure a second successive National League victory.
The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, with neither side able to find the breakthrough. Southend entered the contest second in the National League and unbeaten in five matches, while Barrow arrived looking to build on their 1-0 victory over Aldershot Town the previous weekend.
The contest changed seven minutes after the restart. Paul Mbiya-Kalambayi supplied Harper, who found the net in the 52nd minute to give Barrow a 1-0 lead. It was Harper’s second goal in successive matches after scoring the winner against Aldershot.
Barrow doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Alex Reid provided the assist for Thompson, who converted to make it 2-0 and leave Southend facing a considerable task during the final quarter of the match.
The Shrimpers found a route back into the contest in the 75th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Ryan Colclough stepped up and converted from the spot to reduce the deficit to 2-1, giving the home side renewed hope with 15 minutes remaining.
Barrow responded before Southend could complete the comeback. In the 84th minute, Darren Oldaker inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, restoring the visitors’ two-goal advantage and putting the Bluebirds 3-1 ahead.
There was still further drama in stoppage time. Leon Chambers-Parillon scored for Southend in the 92nd minute to make it 3-2 and once again bring the hosts within a goal of Barrow. The visitors, however, produced an immediate response of their own.
Just two minutes later, Isaac Marriott supplied substitute Dan Mooney, who found the net to restore Barrow’s two-goal cushion and finally put the contest beyond Southend. The 94th-minute strike completed a remarkable second half in which the sides combined for six goals after going into the interval at 0-0.
The final whistle confirmed an impressive 4-2 away victory for Barrow and brought Southend’s five-match unbeaten league run to an end. The Bluebirds followed last weekend’s victory over Aldershot with another three points, recording consecutive National League wins for the first time this season.
Southend remained on 20 points from ten National League matches after suffering their second defeat of the campaign. Barrow moved onto 12 points from ten games, with successive victories providing a significant improvement after an inconsistent opening to the season.
