Scunthorpe United produced an impressive comeback to defeat Hartlepool United 4-1 at the Attis Arena, responding to an early deficit with four unanswered goals. Pat Jones cancelled out Will Harris’s opener before Kyle Hurst, James Norwood and substitute Hugh Parker struck in the second half to secure a much-needed victory for the Iron.
Hartlepool opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Cole Deeming provided the assist for Harris, who found the net to put the visitors ahead as Pools looked for a response after three successive National League defeats.
Their advantage lasted only three minutes. Joe Rowley supplied Jones in the 30th minute and the Scunthorpe forward converted to bring the hosts level at 1-1. Neither side was able to add to the scoring during the remainder of the opening period, leaving the contest evenly poised at the interval.
Scunthorpe made a flying start to the second half and completed the turnaround in the 48th minute. Norwood turned provider for Hurst, who found the net to put the Iron 2-1 ahead and give the hosts the advantage for the first time in the match.
Hartlepool’s situation deteriorated further just six minutes later. Jacob Butterfield supplied Norwood, who added Scunthorpe’s third in the 54th minute after having created the second. Two goals in the opening nine minutes of the half had transformed the contest and left Pools facing a two-goal deficit.
Scunthorpe continued to threaten and added a fourth in the 68th minute. Parker, introduced from the bench only five minutes earlier, made an immediate impact by converting after being supplied by Daniel Batty to put the hosts 4-1 ahead and effectively settle the contest.
The second half also produced several cautions as the intensity increased. Hartlepool’s Jay Benn was booked in the 48th minute, while Butterfield and Rowley received yellow cards for Scunthorpe. Stanley Ashbee was also cautioned during the second half.
Hartlepool were unable to find a response during the closing stages and Scunthorpe comfortably protected their three-goal advantage to secure a convincing 4-1 victory. The Iron had trailed after 27 minutes but responded with four goals across the following 41 minutes, including three after the interval.
The result moved Scunthorpe United onto 10 points from ten National League matches and ended a run of two successive defeats. Hartlepool remained on nine points after ten games after suffering a fourth consecutive league defeat in their first fixture following Lee Clark’s resignation.
