Altrincham claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hartlepool United at the J. Davidson Stadium, with the decisive goal arriving late in the second half. The encounter, played under the floodlights, was a classic National League contest, characterised by its unpredictable nature and significant goalmouth action.
Hartlepool made a bright start and threatened to take an early lead, with efforts from Jamie Miley and Reiss McNally cleared off the line in the opening stages. Brooklyn Ilunga was also causing problems down the left, delivering a dangerous cross towards Will Harris, who was inches away from converting at the back post.
The deadlock was broken in the 28th minute when Altrincham were awarded a penalty following an infringement as Charlie Kirk’s corner was delivered into a crowded penalty area. Kane Hemmings confidently dispatched the spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Nathan Fisher the wrong way to give the home side the advantage.
However, Hartlepool United responded well, and just before half-time, Jamie Miley equalised in the 43rd minute. Brooklyn Ilunga delivered a cross from the left and Miley met it with a header that Altrincham goalkeeper Andy Firth was unable to keep out, ensuring the teams went into the break on level terms.
The second half commenced with both teams vying for control. Miley threatened again shortly after the restart, firing narrowly over from the edge of the area, before Altrincham had an excellent opportunity to regain the lead when Hemmings was unable to convert Kirk’s cross at the far post. Hartlepool then went close themselves when Jay Benn found Cole Deeming, whose first-time effort flew narrowly wide.
The dynamic of the match altered considerably in the 72nd minute when Hartlepool United captain Jack Hunter was shown a second yellow card after pulling Hemmings back, leaving the visitors with ten men. This numerical advantage appeared to spur Altrincham on as they intensified their efforts to find a winning goal, with substitute Jimmy Knowles testing Fisher before Liam Humbles fired wide from a promising position.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 81st minute. Tom Crawford exchanged passes on the edge of the penalty area before driving forward and firing beyond Fisher from inside the box to restore Altrincham’s lead. The Altrincham captain’s late strike against his former club proved to be the decisive moment, securing all three points for Neil Gibson’s team.
The win moved Altrincham up to 10th in the league table with 12 points from eight games and represented their fourth victory of the campaign. Hartlepool United, conversely, remained in 16th place with nine points, having played the same number of fixtures. Their recent form has been patchy, with this defeat marking their second consecutive league loss.
