The Attis Arena played host to a dramatic encounter as Boreham Wood secured a late 2-1 victory over Scunthorpe United. Ben Whitfield’s 88th-minute winner maintained Luke Garrard’s side’s unbeaten start to the National League season and sent the Wood to the top of the table.
The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, with neither side able to find the breakthrough despite an evenly contested first half. Boreham Wood arrived in Lincolnshire having won five and drawn two of their opening seven league fixtures, while Scunthorpe were looking to build on their 2-0 victory away at Sutton United in their previous outing.
The second half commenced with immediate intensity, and Boreham Wood broke the deadlock moments after the restart. In the 46th minute, Tarryn Allarakhia provided the assist for Zak Brunt, who found the net to give the visitors the lead.
Scunthorpe United, however, demonstrated commendable resilience. They responded positively to falling behind, and their persistence was rewarded in the 57th minute. Jacob Butterfield laid the ball off to Tyrell Sellars-Fleming, who made no mistake in levelling the score at 1-1.
As the game entered its final stages, both teams pushed for a winner, creating a tense conclusion. Scunthorpe introduced Reagan Ogle and Alfie Beestin in a double substitution in the 66th minute, replacing Joe Rowley and Jacob Butterfield. Boreham Wood also looked to their bench, with Ben Whitfield and Lewis Richardson replacing Jay Bird and Danny Cashman in the 72nd minute.
Scunthorpe made two further changes in the 77th minute as Hugh Parker replaced Danny Whitehall and James Gale came on for Kyle Hurst, but it was one of Boreham Wood’s substitutes who ultimately decided the contest.
The decisive moment arrived in the 88th minute. Whitfield, who had joined Boreham Wood on loan from Barrow just two days earlier, marked his league debut for the club by heading home from the centre of the penalty area following Charlie O’Connell’s delivery. His late goal restored Boreham Wood’s advantage and left Scunthorpe with little time to respond.
Boreham Wood saw out the remaining minutes to secure a 2-1 victory, with Whitfield’s late intervention proving the difference between the sides. The visitors registered 12 attempts to Scunthorpe’s eight and 10 corners to the hosts’ four, while possession was evenly shared.
The victory moved Boreham Wood to the summit of the National League with 20 points from eight matches, having won six and drawn two to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. For Scunthorpe, the late defeat brought an abrupt end to the momentum generated by their victory at Sutton United in their previous league outing.
