The floodlights of Aggborough Stadium illuminated a midweek encounter in the English National League as Kidderminster Harriers hosted Gateshead. The home side, aiming to build on a promising start to the season, sought to climb further up the league table, while Gateshead, enduring a challenging campaign, looked to halt their recent slide.
There was little to separate the sides during the opening stages, although Gateshead created the first sight of goal in the third minute. Ashley Boatswain showed good pace to reach a ball forward before seeing his effort deflected towards Kidderminster goalkeeper Jack Wint, who gathered comfortably. Harriers responded shortly afterwards when Cian Harries’ free-kick caused problems in the visitors’ penalty area, but Richard Faakye was unable to make the opportunity count. Referee Scott Jackson was kept occupied early on, issuing a yellow card to Gateshead’s Kyle Ferguson in the fourth minute for a mistimed challenge.
As the first half progressed, Kidderminster began to establish themselves and found the breakthrough in the 27th minute. Reece Devine delivered an inviting ball into the penalty area which narrowly evaded Lewis Walker but fell perfectly for Callum Dolan, who powered a first-time finish beyond Noah Phillips to give the Harriers the lead.
Kidderminster almost doubled their advantage just three minutes later. Walker did well to hold up possession while waiting for support before finding Callum Stewart, whose angled effort travelled narrowly wide of the far post. Gateshead threatened again in first-half stoppage time when Freddie Issaka drove forward from a free-kick and got a shot away, but Wint was well positioned to make the save. The half concluded with Kidderminster holding a narrow 1-0 advantage.
Gateshead emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval and began to place the home defence under more sustained pressure. Kidderminster were also forced into changes, with Reece Hall replacing Richard Faakye and Ethan Moore coming on for Lewis Walker in the 53rd minute. A minute later, Zak Brown replaced Callum Stewart.
The visitors created one of their best opportunities around the hour mark when the ball found its way to Jordy Hiwula at the far post. Wint reacted quickly, rushing from his goal to claim the ball amid a heavy collision. The Kidderminster goalkeeper was called into action again five minutes later when Issaka cut inside and fired towards goal, making the initial save before collecting the loose ball at the second attempt.
Kidderminster remained disciplined without the ball as Gateshead continued to search for an equaliser. The visitors made further changes late in the contest, with Luke Supyk and David Eguaibor introduced as they attempted to find a way through the home defence. Harriers continued to look for opportunities on the counter and almost added a second in stoppage time when the ball fell to Zak Brown following a break forward, but he was unable to make a clean connection and his effort went wide.
Despite Gateshead’s second-half pressure, Kidderminster held firm to preserve both their lead and clean sheet. Callum Dolan’s 27th-minute strike ultimately proved the difference as Paul Wotton’s side secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory and another three National League points.
The result moved Kidderminster Harriers onto 17 points from eight matches, continuing an impressive start to the campaign. Gateshead, meanwhile, remained on four points after eight games, with the defeat their sixth of the league season.
