Hornchurch secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at Hornchurch Stadium, with Ryan Inniss’s second-half goal proving decisive. Scunthorpe created opportunities to take something from the contest, but the hosts defended their advantage through the closing stages to claim all three points.
The opening exchanges were closely contested, with neither side able to establish clear control. Hornchurch were forced into an early change in the 17th minute when Joe Kizzi was replaced by Frankie Edwards, but the disruption did little to alter the pattern of a competitive first half.
Scunthorpe gradually began to create openings and threatened the Hornchurch goal as the half developed. The visitors looked to make use of possession in advanced areas, while Hornchurch remained organised and attempted to create opportunities of their own on the break. Despite promising moments at both ends, neither side was able to find the breakthrough and the teams went into half-time level at 0-0.
The Iron produced one of the clearest opportunities of the contest after the restart when Jacob Butterfield’s effort beat the goalkeeper but was cleared off the line, denying Scunthorpe the opening goal. The visitors continued to look dangerous and introduced Luke Brennan for James Gale on the hour as they searched for a way through.
Hornchurch responded with a change of their own in the 67th minute, with Dominic Poleon replacing Henry Sandat. Just three minutes later, the hosts found the breakthrough from a set piece. A corner was delivered into the Scunthorpe penalty area and Tom Dallison-Lisbon headed the ball back across goal, where Inniss was on hand to finish from close range and put Hornchurch 1-0 ahead.
Scunthorpe reacted quickly to falling behind, introducing Hugh Parker and James Bailey for Danny Whitehall and Kyle Hurst in the 72nd minute. The visitors pushed forward with greater urgency as they looked for an equaliser, while Hornchurch increasingly focused on protecting their narrow advantage.
The closing stages became increasingly tense as Scunthorpe continued to search for a way back into the match. Butterfield was cautioned in the 82nd minute before Hornchurch made further changes, with Henry Hearn, Nathan Ferguson and Asher Yearwood introduced as the hosts looked to manage the final minutes. Reagan Ogle also came on for Alfie Beestin as Scunthorpe made one final attempt to rescue a point.
Hornchurch held firm through the remaining minutes to preserve both their lead and clean sheet, with Inniss’s 70th-minute strike ultimately proving enough to secure a 1-0 victory. For Scunthorpe, it was another frustrating afternoon in which opportunities failed to translate into goals.
The victory lifted Hornchurch to eighth place in the completed Saturday National League table with 15 points from nine matches. Scunthorpe United finished the day 22nd with seven points from nine games after suffering their second successive defeat, following the late home loss to Boreham Wood three days earlier.
