Boreham Wood produced an impressive performance to defeat Harrogate Town 4-1 at the Mangata Developments Stadium Meadow Park, strengthening their position at the top of the National League. The visitors struck first, but Luke Garrard’s side responded with four unanswered goals before finishing the match with ten men following Regan Booty’s late dismissal.
Harrogate made the perfect start, taking the lead in the ninth minute. Morgan Williams provided the assist for Bailey Hobson, who found the back of the net to give the visitors an early advantage. Boreham Wood responded strongly to falling behind, however, and were level in the 21st minute when Tarryn Allarakhia converted to make it 1-1.
The turnaround was completed just before half-time. Boreham Wood were awarded a penalty and Zak Brunt stepped up to convert from the spot, sending the hosts into the interval with a 2-1 advantage after recovering from their early setback.
Boreham Wood carried that momentum into the second half and extended their lead in the 56th minute. Chris Bush provided the assist for Jay Bird, who finished from inside the penalty area to make it 3-1 and leave Harrogate facing an increasingly difficult route back into the contest.
The home side struck again ten minutes later. Ben Whitfield, introduced from the bench shortly beforehand, continued the excellent start to his Boreham Wood career by scoring in the 66th minute. Zak Brunt supplied the assist as Whitfield found the net from the centre of the penalty area to put the hosts 4-1 ahead, having also scored the late winner at Scunthorpe on his league debut three days earlier.
Harrogate responded with changes of their own as they attempted to reduce the deficit, with Jack Muldoon and Warren Burrell introduced before George Thomson and Michael Craig followed. Boreham Wood were able to manage their commanding advantage, although the complexion of the closing stages changed when they were reduced to ten men.
Regan Booty, who had been booked in the 67th minute, was shown a straight red card for violent conduct in the 79th minute. Despite the dismissal, Harrogate were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage and Boreham Wood comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest to secure a convincing 4-1 victory.
The result ensured Boreham Wood finished Saturday top of the National League with 23 points from nine matches, three points clear of second-placed Southend United. Garrard’s side remain unbeaten after seven wins and two draws, having scored 23 goals in their opening nine league games. Harrogate Town finished the day in fifth place with 16 points from nine matches after suffering their third defeat of the campaign.
