The Silverlake Stadium played host to a hard-fought encounter as Eastleigh secured a 1-0 victory over Carlisle United in the National League. Aaron Blair’s first-half strike proved to be the decisive moment, earning the Spitfires three points and ending their four-match winless run.
Carlisle created the first opportunity inside two minutes when Micah Obiero combined with David Ajiboye before cutting inside and firing narrowly wide. Eastleigh soon responded through the pace of Blair, who got the better of Ryan Galvin before shooting over from a tight angle. Chances followed at both ends, with Teddy Jenks denied on the edge of the Eastleigh area before Hady Ghandour saw an effort deflected over as the hosts broke forward.
Eastleigh suffered a setback around the half-hour mark when Nick Akoto collided with a barrier. After receiving lengthy treatment, the defender was stretchered off and replaced by Dion Rankine in the 36th minute. The stoppage resulted in nine minutes being added at the end of the first half.
As half-time approached, the deadlock was broken in the 44th minute. Eastleigh attacked on the break and Josh Lundstram delivered a low cross from the left, with Blair getting in front of the Carlisle defence and firing high beyond Adam Desbois from close range to give the Spitfires the lead. Carlisle appealed for a penalty shortly afterwards when Leo Duru went down inside the area, but referee Ben Atkinson waved away the claims and Eastleigh took their 1-0 advantage into the interval.
Rob Elliot responded with a double substitution at half-time, introducing Junior Luamba and Stephen Wearne in place of David Ajiboye and Cameron Harper. Carlisle attempted to increase the pressure, but Eastleigh remained dangerous themselves. Blair saw a penalty appeal rejected before Jordan Cousins came close to doubling the advantage with a downward header that Desbois saved.
Carlisle’s best opportunity to equalise arrived in the 72nd minute. Obiero and Wearne combined to create an excellent opening for Luamba, who found himself free to the left of goal but dragged his effort wide when well placed to score. It proved a costly miss as the visitors continued to struggle to turn possession into clear opportunities.
Both managers made further changes during the closing stages. Carlisle introduced Kenton Richardson and Callum Whelan for Jack Ellis and Teddy Jenks, while Will Randall replaced Ghandour for Eastleigh. Obiero and Wearne both had efforts blocked as Carlisle searched for a late equaliser, but the Spitfires’ defence continued to hold firm.
Blair was replaced by Barney Stone in the 90th minute as Eastleigh looked to see out the remaining stoppage time. Carlisle were unable to find a way through and the final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for the hosts, with Blair’s third National League goal of the season proving enough to separate the sides.
The victory moved Eastleigh onto 14 points from nine matches and ended a run of four league games without a win. Carlisle remained on 10 points from nine matches and finished Saturday in 16th place after extending their winless run to four games. The defeat was also the first time Carlisle had failed to score in the National League this season.
