Southend United produced a devastating attacking display to thrash Gateshead 6-1 at the Gateshead International Stadium, scoring five times before half-time and adding a sixth immediately after the restart. Sam Austin completed a hat-trick and Harry Cardwell scored twice as the Shrimpers recorded their biggest victory of the National League season.
Gateshead actually created the first opportunity of the afternoon, but any early encouragement for the hosts quickly disappeared as Southend took control. The visitors opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Zavier Massiah-Edwards supplied Cardwell, who converted to put the Shrimpers ahead.
Just two minutes later it was 2-0. Massiah-Edwards was again the provider, this time setting up Kyle McAdam as Southend struck twice in quick succession to establish a commanding early advantage. Gateshead struggled to recover from the double blow and the visitors continued to attack with confidence.
Southend added a third in the 19th minute. Vontae Daley-Campbell supplied Austin, who found the net to leave Gateshead facing a considerable deficit with barely a quarter of the contest played. The home side attempted to respond, but Southend remained ruthless whenever opportunities arose.
The match was effectively put beyond Gateshead during another remarkable spell shortly before half-time. Cardwell scored his second of the afternoon in the 40th minute to make it 4-0 before Austin struck again just two minutes later, completing his own brace and sending Southend into the interval with an extraordinary five-goal advantage.
Any hope that the break might halt Southend’s momentum disappeared almost immediately after the restart. Austin completed his hat-trick in the 47th minute, scoring his third goal in the space of 28 minutes to make it 6-0 and cap a remarkable individual performance.
With the result effectively settled, the remainder of the second half took on a different complexion. Both managers used their benches extensively, with Southend introducing Ryan Colclough, Rayan Oyebade, Promise Omochere, Joshua Popoola and Ryan Battrum as they managed their substantial advantage. Gateshead also made a series of changes as Lee Cattermole attempted to find some response from his side.
Southend were able to see out the contest comfortably, although Gateshead did finally find a consolation in the 89th minute. Substitute David Eguaibor scored for the hosts to deny the Shrimpers a clean sheet, but it did little to alter the outcome after an afternoon dominated by the visitors’ clinical finishing.
The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 6-1 victory for Southend, built on an exceptional opening 47 minutes in which they repeatedly punished Gateshead. Austin’s hat-trick and Cardwell’s brace accounted for five of the six goals, while Massiah-Edwards contributed two early assists as the visitors overwhelmed the home defence.
The victory ensured Southend United finished Saturday second in the National League table with 20 points from nine matches, three points behind leaders Boreham Wood. Gateshead, meanwhile, ended the day bottom of the table with four points from nine games after suffering their seventh defeat of the campaign.
