Forest Green Rovers 1-3 Boston United

Boston United secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn, with Tom Cursons scoring twice before Lennon Wheeldon added a third to seal the points. Forest Green enjoyed long spells on top and created numerous opportunities, but Boston proved more clinical in front of goal to claim their third National League victory of the season.

The game exploded into life within seconds of the first whistle. Boston took the lead after just 46 seconds when Cursons broke through the Forest Green defence and beat Ethan Ross in a one-on-one, calmly placing his finish into the bottom corner. The hosts produced an immediate response, however, and were level two minutes later. Kyle McAllister drove forward before combining with Sean Etaluku and then laying the ball off for Jayden Clarke, who fired beyond Louis Chadwick to make it 1-1.

Forest Green recovered strongly from their early setback and began to take control of the contest. McAllister created an opportunity for D’Mani Mellor, whose effort was blocked by Chadwick, before Etaluku caused further problems down the left and supplied Clarke for another attempt that was blocked. A defensive mistake from Boston then presented Tate Campbell with an opportunity, but Chadwick produced an important save to keep the scores level.

Clarke came closest to putting Forest Green ahead before the interval when he unleashed a powerful effort from outside the penalty area that crashed against the crossbar. The hosts had enjoyed the better of much of the first half after conceding inside the opening minute, but they were unable to convert their pressure into a second goal and the teams went into the break level at 1-1.

Forest Green began the second half in similar fashion and should have taken the lead when Mellor met a delivery from close range but sent his header over the crossbar. Instead, it was Boston who struck at the other end. A foul inside the penalty area resulted in a spot-kick in the 52nd minute and Cursons stepped up to send Ross the wrong way, scoring his second goal of the afternoon and restoring the visitors’ lead.

Forest Green responded with changes shortly before the hour, with new signing Mees Rijks replacing Mellor and Nick Haughton coming on for Kyle Kelly. Preston Fearon and Tre Pemberton were introduced shortly afterwards for Campbell and Kelvin Abrefa as Robbie Savage looked for a route back into the contest.

The hosts continued to create opportunities, with Filozofe Mabete and Pemberton both threatening as Boston came under pressure. However, the Pilgrims weathered that spell and struck again in the 75th minute. Georgie Gent delivered a corner towards the near post and Wheeldon applied the finishing touch from close range to make it 3-1, giving Forest Green a considerable deficit to overcome with 15 minutes remaining.

Forest Green introduced Omari Patrick for Freddie Sass as they continued to search for a response, while Boston made changes of their own to protect their advantage. Connor Teale was replaced by Sai Sachdev, Cursons made way for Lenell John-Lewis after his two-goal contribution, and Oliver Bostock replaced Ken Aboh in the closing stages.

There was no way back for Forest Green as Boston saw out the remaining minutes to secure a valuable 3-1 away victory. The Pilgrims’ clinical finishing proved decisive on an afternoon when the hosts had enjoyed plenty of attacking pressure but failed to make enough of the opportunities they created.

The victory lifted Boston United to 15th place in the completed Saturday National League table with 11 points from nine matches. Forest Green Rovers finished the day one place above them in 14th on 13 points from nine games, with the defeat their fourth of the campaign and their first in three league matches.
