Holker Street played host to a keenly contested encounter as Barrow edged out Aldershot Town 1-0, with Rekeem Harper’s second-half goal securing a valuable three points for the Bluebirds. The result gave Barrow their second National League victory of the season and brought an end to Aldershot’s six-match unbeaten run.
Barrow made a bright start, with Harper seeing an early effort blocked before Arian Allen headed wide as the hosts applied pressure during the opening stages. Aldershot soon began to threaten at the other end, however, and Barrow goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom produced a strong save to deny Marcus Dinanga from close range.
There were opportunities for both sides as the first half developed, but neither could find the breakthrough. Winterbottom was called into action again to keep the visitors out, while Barrow continued to look for openings of their own. Arian Allen received the game’s first yellow card in the 21st minute, with Aldershot’s Nino Adom-Malaki and Michee Efete also cautioned before the interval. The sides went into the break level at 0-0.
The second half initially followed a similar pattern. Paul Kalambayi found space to try his luck from distance for Barrow, sending his effort narrowly wide, while Aldershot continued to pose a threat as they searched for the opening goal.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute. Danny Amos supplied the ball into the penalty area and Harper converted from the centre of the box to put Barrow 1-0 ahead with his first league goal of the season. The strike proved to be the decisive moment of the contest.
Barrow made a series of changes shortly afterwards, with Amos among those withdrawn as Adam Murray looked to see out the advantage. Aldershot responded with several substitutions of their own, introducing Hakeem Sandah, Alfonso Tenconi, Tristan Abrahams and Elijah Oladunjoye as they searched for an equaliser.
The hosts came close to doubling their advantage with around a quarter of an hour remaining when Kennedy Digie’s header struck the crossbar and bounced down onto the goal line before being cleared. Substitute Seb Thompson later struck the post as Barrow continued to threaten despite protecting a narrow lead.
Aldershot were unable to find a way through in the closing stages, with Michael Stickland receiving a yellow card in stoppage time before Barrow’s Scott Smith was also cautioned. The Bluebirds held firm through five minutes of added time to secure the clean sheet and a 1-0 victory.
The win moved Barrow onto nine points from nine matches and provided a welcome response after their midweek defeat at Solihull Moors. Aldershot remained on 15 points from nine games, with the defeat ending a six-match unbeaten league run in which they had recorded four wins and two draws.
