Worthing continued their impressive recent form with a 2-1 victory over FC Halifax Town at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium. Joe Cook gave the hosts an early lead before Will Hugill equalised for Halifax, but Jordan Young restored Worthing’s advantage before half-time and the Rebels held on against ten-man opposition to secure all three points.
Worthing made an excellent start and opened the scoring after just seven minutes. Young supplied Cook, who found the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.
Halifax responded quickly and were level just nine minutes later. Ben Tollitt provided the assist for Hugill, who converted in the 16th minute to make it 1-1 and ensure Worthing’s early advantage was short-lived.
The hosts continued to search for another breakthrough and regained the lead in the 39th minute. Young, having created the opening goal, turned scorer to put Worthing 2-1 ahead and ensure they went into the interval with a narrow advantage.
Halifax looked for a route back into the contest after the restart, while Worthing attempted to protect their lead and extend the four-match unbeaten run they had brought into the fixture. The second half became increasingly competitive, with Tayt-Lemar Trusty and Theo Wainman cautioned for the visitors and Jayden Moore and Charley Kendall booked for Worthing.
The visitors’ task became considerably more difficult in the 77th minute when Dylan Crowe received his second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving Halifax to chase an equaliser with ten men during the closing stages.
Both managers turned to their benches as the match approached its conclusion. Halifax introduced Wainman, Connor Douglas and Amari Morgan-Smith as they searched for a response, while Worthing brought on Emmerson Sutton, Harry Ransom and Bailey Smith as the hosts looked to see out their advantage.
Despite Halifax’s efforts, Worthing held firm through the remaining minutes to preserve their 2-1 lead. Young proved decisive with a goal and an assist, while Cook’s early strike helped provide the foundation for another valuable victory.
The final whistle confirmed Worthing’s third successive National League win and extended their unbeaten sequence to five matches, during which they have collected 11 points from a possible 15. Halifax, meanwhile, saw their three-match unbeaten run brought to an end.
The victory moved Worthing onto 17 points from ten National League matches, continuing their climb after a strong recent run. FC Halifax Town remained on 13 points from ten games after suffering their fifth league defeat of the season.
