Woking produced a devastating second-half attacking display to secure a 5-2 victory over Carlisle United at Brunton Park. The sides went into the interval level at 1-1, but the visitors scored four times after the restart, with John Marquis completing a hat-trick as the Cardinals claimed an emphatic away win.
Woking made an excellent start and opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Jaiden Putman supplied Shadrach Ogie, who found the net to give the visitors an early advantage and leave Carlisle chasing the game almost immediately.
The hosts responded within two minutes. Carlisle drew level in the ninth minute when Chinwike Okoli inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, restoring parity and ensuring Woking’s early advantage lasted only briefly.
The remainder of the first half proved considerably tighter. Both sides looked for opportunities to take the lead, with Miguel Azeez receiving a yellow card for Carlisle and Woking goalscorer Ogie also entering the referee’s notebook. Neither team was able to add to the scoring before the interval and the sides went into half-time level at 1-1.
Woking required only two minutes of the second half to regain the lead. Matt Ward struck in the 47th minute to make it 2-1 and provide the platform for a remarkable spell in which the visitors took complete control of the scoreline.
Marquis added Woking’s third in the 56th minute, converting after being supplied by Roy Syla to establish a two-goal cushion. Carlisle responded with changes, including the introduction of Regan Linney in the 54th minute, but the hosts were unable to halt Woking’s momentum.
The visitors were handed an opportunity to extend their advantage from the penalty spot in the 69th minute and Marquis made no mistake, scoring his second of the afternoon to put Woking 4-1 ahead. Carlisle introduced Cameron Harper shortly afterwards as they attempted to find a route back into a contest that was rapidly slipping away.
Marquis then completed his hat-trick in the 81st minute. Woking were awarded a second penalty and the striker converted again to make it 5-1, capping an outstanding individual performance and effectively putting the result beyond doubt.
Carlisle did manage a response two minutes later. Harper supplied fellow substitute Linney, who found the net in the 83rd minute to reduce the deficit to 5-2, but there was no prospect of a comeback during the remaining minutes.
The final whistle confirmed an emphatic 5-2 victory for Woking, with four second-half goals transforming a match that had been evenly poised at the interval. Marquis’s hat-trick proved the highlight, while Ward and Ogie also found the net as the Cardinals recorded their third National League victory of the season.
The victory moved Woking onto 12 points from ten matches and provided an impressive response after taking just one point from their previous two fixtures. Carlisle United remained on 10 points from ten games and are now without a victory in five league matches, having taken just two points during that sequence.
