FC Halifax Town came from behind to draw 1-1 with Boston United at The Shay, with Pilgrims goalkeeper Louis Chadwick producing a series of second-half saves to deny the hosts a winner.
Boston made the brighter start, but Halifax soon began creating chances of their own. Tommy McDermott tested Chadwick after being picked out by Raheem Conte, before Conor Carty and Ben Tollitt were also denied by the Boston goalkeeper. At the other end, Tom Cursons headed wide from a Georgie Gent cross.
The visitors took the lead on the half-hour through Lennon Wheeldon. Gent’s quick throw released the forward, who held off the Halifax defence before driving a powerful effort from outside the box past True Grant at his near post. It was Wheeldon’s third league goal of the season, with all three having come away from home.
Halifax responded almost immediately after the restart. Max Bardell’s long ball found Carty inside the Boston penalty area and the striker controlled it before firing a half-volley beyond Chadwick in the 47th minute to make it 1-1.
The hosts then threatened to turn the game around. Chadwick produced an excellent save to deny Shaun Hobson shortly after the equaliser and subsequently kept out efforts from McDermott, Cruz Allen and Tollitt as Halifax searched for a second goal.
Boston made changes as the second half progressed, with Lenell John-Lewis replacing Cursons and Connor McBride coming on for Gavan Holohan. Ben Hammond and Jack Holmes were later introduced for Levi Sutton and Ken Aboh. Halifax brought on Connor Douglas for McDermott just after the hour mark.
Halifax went particularly close during the closing stages. Tollitt was denied by Chadwick when through on goal before Tayt Trusty struck the crossbar. Chadwick then produced one of his best saves of the evening in the 84th minute, clawing away Trusty’s glancing header to preserve parity.
Boston nevertheless had an opportunity to snatch all three points in the closing moments. Grant fumbled a ball into the area under pressure from John-Lewis, but substitute Holmes was unable to take advantage and the points were shared.
The draw left Boston 16th in the National League with 12 points from 11 matches, while Halifax finished Tuesday night’s fixtures one place behind them in 17th with 14 points. Boston have now taken four points from their last three league games, while Halifax had to settle for a point after Carty’s third home goal of the season brought them back into the contest.
