Fylde 0-2 Carlisle United

Carlisle United ended a five-match winless run with a 2-0 victory over AFC Fylde at Mill Farm, as goals from Jack Ellis and Regan Linney secured the Cumbrians’ first clean sheet of the season.

Carlisle made the stronger start and created several opportunities during the opening stages. Regan Linney, restored to the starting line-up after scoring against Woking at the weekend, was involved as the visitors looked to make an early breakthrough, while Fylde goalkeeper Zac Jones was called into action.

Fylde captain Corey Whelan was booked in the 16th minute before Carlisle skipper Morgan Feeney followed him into the referee’s notebook in the 28th. The visitors continued to threaten and eventually found the breakthrough five minutes before half-time.

Ellis was the scorer, dispossessing Danny Mayor before advancing and finishing past Jones to put Carlisle 1-0 ahead in the 40th minute. The defender was then booked shortly afterwards, but United took their advantage into the interval.

Fylde made a double change just before the hour, with Greg Olley and Cedric Main replacing Mayor and Millar Matthews-Lewis. Craig Mahon made two further substitutions in the 68th minute as Theo Upton and Luke Butterfield replaced Ethan Mitchell and Chris Merrie.

Carlisle also turned to their bench in the 68th minute, introducing Stephen Wearne and David Ajiboye for Georgie Kelly and Teddy Jenks. Ajiboye would go on to make an important contribution to the decisive second goal.

That arrived in the 79th minute. Ajiboye supplied the ball into the area and Linney converted from close range to double Carlisle’s advantage. It was Linney’s second goal in successive matches after he had also scored in Saturday’s 5-2 defeat by Woking.

Carlisle saw out the remaining minutes to secure their first clean sheet of the campaign and their first victory since beating Scunthorpe United 4-2 on 31 August. The result ended a sequence of five league matches without a win, during which Rob Elliot’s side had collected just two points.

Fylde’s defeat brought an end to a run of ten consecutive National League matches in which they had scored. They finished Tuesday night’s fixtures fifth with 20 points from 11 games, while Carlisle climbed to 16th on 13 points.

Right then, let’s have a butchers at the Fylde vs Carlisle United game. The final whistle blew with a 0-2 scoreline, Carlisle nicking it. Bookies had Fylde at 2.10, Draw at 3.90, and Carlisle at 2.80. TopB1ns Edge, bless its cotton socks, fancied Fylde for the win, which, as we can see, didn’t quite pan out. Bit of a teething issue there, I reckon.

Now, where TopB1ns Edge did show some promise was with the Both Teams To Score market. The Edge was bang on with ‘Yes’, but the bookies had that priced at a stingy 1.40, so not exactly a goldmine, but it’s a start.

Over/Under was a bit of a mixed bag. Over 0.5 and Over 1.5 were nailed on, which is hardly surprising, is it? But the Edge was also predicting Over 2.5, which was a miss as the game finished 0-2. The bookies had Over 2.5 at 1.44, so that would have been a decent shout if it had landed. The rest of the Overs were correctly predicted as Under by the Edge, but honestly, after the second goal went in, it was always going to be Under. Still, the TopB1ns Edge is showing some flashes of genius, even if it’s still in its early days. We’ll keep an eye on it, for sure.
