AFC Fylde ended a run of two successive National League defeats with a 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at Mill Farm, as Danny Mayor and Aaron Drewe scored in either half to leave the Iron with four losses from their last five league matches.
The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute through Mayor, who scored his second goal in three league appearances after also finding the net in Fylde’s 1-0 victory at Boston United in September. The midfielder’s finish gave Craig Mahon’s side a 1-0 advantage at the interval.
Scunthorpe, who had beaten Hartlepool United 4-1 in their previous home game but lost 3-0 at Barrow before that, were unable to find an equaliser after the restart. Joe Starbuck was cautioned early in the second half, while Fylde’s Tom Whelan was booked shortly after the hour.
Fylde doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when Will Lancaster supplied Drewe, who scored his first National League goal of the season. The defender had started all 13 league matches for the Coasters, and his goal left Scunthorpe needing two in the final 25 minutes.
Andy Butler responded with four substitutions shortly afterwards. Jordan Richards replaced Kyle Hurst, while Tyler Denton, Will Evans and James Gale came on for Regan Clayton, Patrick Jones and Jacob Butterfield respectively.
Fylde introduced Harvey Broad and Theo Upton for Mayor and Greg Olley in the 74th minute, with Cedric Main and Luke Butterfield also appearing later in the half. The hosts preserved their two-goal advantage to record a clean sheet in the clubs’ first competitive meeting.
Mahon welcomed the response following defeats by Carlisle United and Southend United, with Fylde having conceded five goals across those two matches. The result was their seventh league win of the season and moved them to 23 points from 13 games.
Fylde finished Saturday seventh in the National League, two points behind fourth-placed Yeovil Town. Scunthorpe remained 22nd with 10 points from 12 matches, having lost four of their last five league games and failed to score in their last two.
