Wealdstone 0-6 Yeovil Town

Brett McGavin scored the first hat-trick of his career as Yeovil Town thrashed nine-man Wealdstone 6-0 at Grosvenor Vale, recording a second successive six-goal victory and extending their unbeaten National League run to six matches.

Wealdstone had an early opportunity to take the lead when Fejiri Okenabirhie broke through in the sixth minute, but Yeovil goalkeeper Jos Barker made an excellent one-on-one save. Ryan Jones then appealed for a penalty at the other end after going down under a challenge inside the area, but referee Callum Jones waved play on.

The match changed in the 26th minute when Wealdstone goalkeeper Dante Baptiste was sent off for a challenge on Archie Davies outside the penalty area. The hosts withdrew forward Olufela Olomola to introduce substitute goalkeeper Endurance Johnson, leaving them to play more than an hour with 10 men.

Yeovil took advantage in the 34th minute. Davies delivered into the area and McGavin’s initial effort was blocked, but James Daly collected the loose ball and drove a low shot beyond Johnson. Slavi Spasov almost doubled the lead five minutes later, only for Johnson to produce a good save from close range.

The Glovers led by just one goal at the interval, but Johl Powell made it 2-0 shortly after the hour. Ben Radcliffe played him through and Powell held off a challenge before slipping his finish between Johnson’s legs. Yeovil manager Billy Rowley then introduced Mason Obeng, Stephen Walker and debutant Owen Dean during a triple substitution.

McGavin’s hat-trick began in the 68th minute, when the Yeovil captain scored the visitors’ third. He added his second three minutes later after Johnson’s misplaced pass fell into his path, allowing him to advance into the area and finish.

The midfielder completed his first career hat-trick in the 84th minute with the pick of his three goals, striking from around 30 yards and sending a dipping effort into the bottom corner. His three goals had arrived in just 16 minutes, giving Yeovil a 5-0 lead.

Powell added the sixth in the first minute of stoppage time after Dean pressured Johnson into another mistake. The goalkeeper’s attempted pass reached Powell, who drove into the penalty area and finished to complete his brace.

There was still time for another major incident. Aidan Francis-Clarke was sent off after Yeovil were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, leaving Wealdstone with nine men. Powell stepped up with the chance to complete his own hat-trick, but Johnson saved the spot-kick to prevent a seventh goal.

Yeovil have now scored 12 goals without reply across their last two National League matches, following their 6-0 victory over Boston United the previous Saturday. Rowley’s side finished the latest round fourth with 25 points from 13 games, while Wealdstone dropped to 19th with 12 points after suffering a second successive league defeat.

Right then, let’s get stuck into this Wealdstone versus Yeovil Town clash. It was a bit of a shocker, this one, as Yeovil absolutely walloped Wealdstone 6-0. The bookies had Yeovil as slight favourites at 2.35, with Wealdstone at 2.55.

Now, the TopB1ns Edge, bless its cotton socks, it’s still finding its feet, version 1 you see. For the main 1X2 bet, the Edge fancied Wealdstone to nick it. Clearly, that was a bit of a howler, a real teething issue there.

On the goals front, the Edge did alright. It correctly predicted BTTS Yes, which was a bit optimistic given the scoreline, but it did see Over 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 goals, all of which landed. However, it went against the grain on the higher totals, predicting Under 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5 goals, which, considering the six-goal thrashing, was a bit of a miss. The Edge did correctly predict Under 6.5, so at least it got one of the bigger numbers right. All in all, a mixed bag for the Edge, but Yeovil’s demolition job certainly blew away some of those predictions.
