Yeovil Town secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Solihull Moors at Huish Park on Friday night, returning to winning ways in emphatic fashion. The Glovers produced an impressive attacking display, with three goals during a dramatic closing period putting the result beyond doubt.
Yeovil started brightly and created the first opening when Archie Davies switched play to Ryan Jones, whose cross was headed over by Slavi Spasov. Jones then tested Nathaniel Ford from outside the penalty area before Davies fired narrowly wide as the hosts continued to threaten.
The pressure paid off in the 15th minute. Jones received possession on the right before cutting inside onto his left foot and curling an excellent strike into the bottom corner to give Yeovil the lead. Solihull looked for a response, but Tyrell Warren was unable to trouble Jos Barker with an effort at the other end, while James Daly later sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal as Yeovil searched for a second.
The Glovers took their 1-0 advantage into the interval, but Solihull emerged with greater intensity after the restart. Jacob Wakeling and Joe Sbarra combined to create an early opportunity, with Sbarra forcing Barker into action as the visitors attempted to find a route back into the contest.
Yeovil gradually regained control and doubled their advantage in the 58th minute. A mistake from Jevon Mills saw his attempted clearance roll back towards his own goal with Ford out of position, allowing Spasov to make sure the ball crossed the line and put the hosts 2-0 ahead.
Solihull refused to concede the contest and continued to apply pressure. Ben Worman tested Barker before Sbarra saw another effort turned behind. From the resulting corner, substitute Matty Carson delivered into the area and an unfortunate deflection off Barker sent the ball into the Yeovil net, reducing the deficit and briefly giving the visitors hope of a comeback.
That hope was short-lived. Yeovil responded almost immediately, with Zain Westbrooke producing a perfectly weighted pass for substitute Johl Powell, who drove the ball beyond Ford to restore the Glovers’ two-goal advantage in the 88th minute. Powell had only recently entered the action in place of Spasov and made an immediate impact from the bench.
With Solihull pushing forward in search of another way back into the match, Yeovil continued to threaten on the counter. Eight minutes of added time were indicated, and the hosts took advantage deep into stoppage time. A cross from the right found Charlie Lennon, whose initial effort was saved by Ford, but Powell reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home in the 97th minute to complete his brace and seal a convincing 4-1 victory.
The result moved Yeovil Town from 10th to 6th in the National League table on Friday night, with 15 points from nine matches, putting the Glovers inside the play-off places ahead of Saturday’s fixtures. Solihull Moors remained bottom of the table in 24th place with four points from nine games.
