Worthing came from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Southend United at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium, where Dominic Johnson-Fisher scored a superb solo goal and created another before Jordan Young capitalised on a goalkeeping error to earn the Rebels a point. Southend had led 2-0 at half-time and went ahead again through debutant Tyreece Simpson, but could not hold on for victory.
Southend created the better early opportunities, with Taylor Seymour twice denying new loan signing Omari Patrick. Worthing also threatened when Johnson-Fisher’s looping header was tipped over by Joe Duncan, but the visitors took the lead in the 16th minute when Kyle McAdam advanced down the left and cut the ball back for captain Oli Coker to finish from close range.
Worthing almost responded through Razzaq Coleman De-Graft, whose swerving effort went narrowly wide, before Cory Adjetey-Brew volleyed over from distance. Southend doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when McAdam again provided the opening, releasing Promise Omochere to strike a powerful finish in off the underside of the crossbar.
Seymour prevented further damage before half-time, saving Darren Oldaker’s free-kick and producing another important stop from Patrick. Worthing manager Adam Hinshelwood responded with three changes at the interval, introducing Jordan Young, Jack Wadham and Charley Kendall as the hosts looked for a way back into the match.
Worthing reduced the deficit in the 57th minute through an outstanding individual effort from Johnson-Fisher. Collecting possession well inside his own half, the forward carried the ball more than 50 yards before driving a powerful shot into the top corner beyond Duncan. Six minutes later, he turned provider, beating Vontae Daley-Campbell on the right and delivering a low cross for Adjetey-Brew to finish from close range. It was the Queens Park Rangers loanee’s fourth goal in three league matches.
Southend regained the lead almost immediately. Kieron Dyer had introduced Simpson for Omochere in the 62nd minute, and the striker marked his debut with a goal just four minutes later, turning the ball home from close range following a set-piece to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.
Worthing had opportunities to equalise again, with Kendall narrowly failing to reach a Johnson-Fisher cross before Young worked his way into the penalty area and shot wide. Southend nearly extended their advantage when Simpson rounded Seymour, but Jayden Moore recovered to make an important goal-line clearance.
The hosts finally drew level in the 76th minute when Young struck from the edge of the penalty area. Duncan appeared to have the shot covered but failed to hold it, allowing the ball to slip through his grasp and into the net. Southend almost responded once more when Simpson turned inside the area and struck the crossbar, while Kendall and substitute Emmerson Sutton had late opportunities for Worthing.
Neither side could find a seventh goal, leaving Southend to settle for a second successive league draw after their 2-2 result against FC Halifax Town. Simpson’s goalscoring debut was a positive for Dyer’s side, but they had surrendered a two-goal advantage and then a second-half lead despite creating enough chances to win.
Worthing extended their unbeaten National League run to 10 matches, having won their previous three league fixtures. The Rebels finished Tuesday fifth with 28 points from 15 games, while Southend remained third on 29 points, maintaining their one-point advantage over the Sussex club.
