Solihull Moors ended a four-match National League losing run with a 3-2 victory at Wealdstone, surviving a late fightback after Marvin Johnson and Jamie Andrews had established a two-goal first-half lead at Grosvenor Vale. Substitute Scott High scored what proved to be the winner before Fejiri Okenabirhie set up a tense finish.
Chris Millington’s side made an immediate breakthrough when Johnson opened the scoring in the third minute. It was an early setback for Wealdstone, who had arrived on the back of a 1-0 victory at Aldershot Town, while Solihull were looking for their first league win since September.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when Andrews found the net, with Johnson credited with the assist. Solihull therefore reached the interval 2-0 ahead, having scored twice in the opening 20 minutes.
Wealdstone manager Gary Waddock introduced Joe Newton for Ronan Maher in the 35th minute and made another change at half-time, replacing Abraham Kanu with Connor McAvoy. The hosts also brought on Jack Cook, Dylan Kadji and Okenabirhie shortly after the hour as they searched for a way back into the contest.
Solihull made changes of their own, with Carter Pinnington replacing Oscar Rutherford before High and Joe Sbarra were introduced shortly after the hour. High came on for Ben Wodskou, while Sbarra replaced Elias Kachunga.
Wealdstone finally reduced the deficit in the 81st minute when Aaron Henry scored, with Luke Norris credited with the assist. The goal brought the hosts back into contention after they had trailed for more than an hour.
Solihull responded just three minutes later. Sbarra supplied fellow substitute High, who scored in the 84th minute to restore the visitors’ two-goal advantage and make it 3-1. It proved an important contribution from both players after their introductions in the second half.
The hosts struck again in the 89th minute when Okenabirhie scored after being set up by Newton, reducing the deficit to a single goal. Wealdstone had now scored twice in the final 10 minutes of normal time, but Solihull held on through the closing stages to secure all three points.
The victory was Solihull’s first in the National League since their 4-2 win at Woking on 29 September, ending a sequence of four successive league defeats. Millington’s side moved to 10 points from 15 games, remaining 23rd in the table.
Wealdstone’s defeat followed their victory at Aldershot and left Waddock’s side 19th with 15 points from 15 matches. The Stones had also beaten Worthing 3-0 earlier in October, but their late goals were not enough to prevent another home league defeat.
