Temitope Eweka headed home an 89th-minute equaliser as Eastleigh preserved their unbeaten home record with a 1-1 draw against Southend United at the Silverlake Stadium.
Eastleigh made the stronger start and created an opening after seven minutes when Jake Caprice’s delivery reached Josh Lundstram, whose effort from six yards went narrowly over. Hady Ghandour then went close after Eweka’s flicked header found the forward, but Jack Sims produced a good save to keep him out.
Southend began to threaten as the first half developed, with Ryan Colclough testing Nick Townsend from inside the penalty area after 20 minutes. Four minutes later the visitors were ahead, as Colclough clipped a cross towards the back post and Promise Omochere headed home from close range.
Eastleigh responded through home debutant Jonny Williams, whose long-range effort was saved by Sims. Southend then had an opportunity to double their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Townsend misjudged a corner, but neither Leon Chambers-Parillon nor Sahid Kamara could capitalise during the resulting goalmouth scramble.
Colclough went close to adding a second shortly after the restart, sending an effort narrowly wide, before Eastleigh threatened at the other end when Ghandour’s attempted cross forced Sims to tip the ball over his crossbar.
Eastleigh made a double substitution shortly after the hour, with Dion Rankine replacing Caprice and Harry Sidwell coming on for Williams. Southend also made changes, introducing Zavier Massiah-Edwards for Colclough before Harry Cardwell and Lewys Twamley replaced Omochere and Kamara.
The Spitfires increasingly pushed for an equaliser as the second half progressed. Aaron Blair tried an acrobatic effort that went wide, while Southend continued to threaten on the counter, with Twamley firing wide from the edge of the area and Sam Austin later being denied by Townsend.
Southend appeared set to leave with all three points until Eastleigh finally found their equaliser in the 89th minute. Lundstram delivered a dangerous cross towards the back post and Eweka rose highest to head beyond Sims, scoring for the second successive match.
Neither side could find a winner during stoppage time, leaving Eastleigh unbeaten in all six of their National League matches at the Silverlake this season. Southend also maintained their unbeaten away record, although Eweka’s late intervention denied them a seventh league victory of the campaign.
The point moved Southend onto 21 from 11 matches and left them third in the National League at the end of Wednesday night’s fixtures. Eastleigh moved onto 15 points from 11 games.
