Southend United welcome AFC Fylde to Roots Hall on Saturday with just one point separating the sides near the top of the National League. The Shrimpers begin the weekend third on 21 points, with fifth-placed Fylde on 20.
Southend have gone two matches without a win following an impressive run of three victories in four. A 3-1 home win over Tamworth was followed by a 6-1 victory at Gateshead, before Barrow ended their five-match unbeaten run with a 4-2 win at Roots Hall.
Kevin Maher’s side responded with a point at Eastleigh on Wednesday, although they were denied victory by Temitope Eweka’s 89th-minute equaliser. Promise Omochere had headed Southend ahead during the first half before the hosts struck late to earn a 1-1 draw.
Goals have been a consistent feature of Southend’s season. They have scored in all 11 of their National League matches and have found the net 26 times, including 11 goals across their last four fixtures.
Fylde arrive after a 2-0 home defeat by Carlisle United on Tuesday, when Jack Ellis and Regan Linney scored to give the visitors their first clean sheet of the season. It was Fylde’s second defeat in three matches and the first time this season they had failed to score in a league game.
That setback followed a productive run for the Coasters. They won 4-1 at Yeovil Town and 2-1 at Harrogate Town before losing at home to Altrincham, then responded with a 2-1 victory at Boston United. Luca Thomas has been a significant part of their attacking start and leads Fylde with six league goals.
Recent meetings between the clubs have been evenly divided, with two victories apiece across four encounters. Southend won the most recent meeting 2-0 at Roots Hall in January 2025, having lost 2-1 at Mill Farm earlier that season.
Southend enter Saturday third with 21 points from 11 matches, having scored 26 and conceded 17. Fylde are a point behind in fifth, with 21 goals scored and 15 conceded from their 11 games.
Both sides have produced plenty of goals during the opening two months of the season, but arrive after being checked in their most recent fixtures. Southend’s 11-match scoring run continues despite taking one point from their last two games, while Fylde are looking for a response after being kept scoreless for the first time this season.
