Gateshead welcome Worthing to the Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday looking to end a run of five successive National League defeats. The Heed remain bottom with four points from 11 matches, while Worthing arrive unbeaten in six.
Gateshead’s latest defeat came at home to Altrincham on Tuesday, when Jimmy Knowles scored the only goal after 21 minutes. Pete Jameson saved a late penalty from Knowles and then denied Lucas Weaver from the rebound, but Gateshead were unable to find an equaliser.
It was a considerably tighter contest than several of Gateshead’s recent defeats. Lee Cattermole’s side lost 4-0 at Forest Green Rovers and 1-0 at Kidderminster before a 6-1 home defeat by Southend United and another 4-0 loss at Wealdstone. They have scored only once and conceded 16 goals across their last five league matches.
Worthing’s recent sequence provides a sharp contrast. Adam Hinshelwood’s side are unbeaten in six National League games, taking 12 points from that run. Draws against Fylde and Barrow were followed by three successive victories over Hornchurch, Hartlepool United and FC Halifax Town before Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Yeovil.
The Rebels won 3-1 at Hartlepool during that sequence, with Cory Adjetey-Brew scoring his first senior goal before Ricky Aguiar and Jose Marquez added the other two. They then beat Halifax 2-1, with Joe Cook and Jordan Young on target, before Razzaq Coleman De-Graft scored in Tuesday’s draw at Huish Park.
Saturday will be the first competitive meeting between Gateshead and Worthing. It is also one of the longest journeys of Worthing’s first National League campaign, with around 290 miles separating the clubs. Worthing have identified the trip as the fourth-longest away journey anywhere in the English football pyramid this season.
Gateshead enter the weekend 24th with one win, one draw and nine defeats from their opening 11 matches. They have scored six goals and conceded 25. Worthing are eighth on 18 points after five wins, three draws and three defeats, scoring 20 and conceding 17.
Worthing have scored in every National League game during their first season at this level and travel north on their longest unbeaten run of the campaign. Gateshead’s immediate task is to halt a five-match losing sequence in which they have been kept scoreless four times.
