Boreham Wood recovered from a goal down to beat Altrincham 3-1 at Meadow Park, scoring three times after the interval to extend their lead at the top of the National League to seven points.
Altrincham had the better of the opening half and threatened after 11 minutes when Charlie Kirk’s cross was met by Matty Kosylo, whose flicked header was saved by Ted Curd. Jimmy Knowles then found Sam Taylor inside the area, but Marley Marshall-Miranda blocked his effort.
Boreham Wood’s first clear opening arrived in the 24th minute when Zak Brunt released Jay Bird, only for Jake Cooper to make an important block. Two minutes later Altrincham were ahead. Kosylo sent Knowles through behind the home defence and the forward rounded Curd before finishing into the empty net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Robins continued to frustrate the league leaders for the remainder of the half. Bird created an opening for Ben Whitfield shortly after the goal, but his effort was deflected wide, before Altrincham goalkeeper Andy Firth produced an excellent save from Whitfield in stoppage time to preserve the visitors’ 1-0 lead at the break.
Boreham Wood improved after the restart and Firth was required again five minutes into the second half to keep out Lewis Richardson. The equaliser arrived in the 56th minute when Chris Bush converted from close range at the back post. Altrincham appealed for handball, but referee Kirsty Dowle allowed the goal to stand.
Luke Garrard’s side continued to create chances after drawing level. Richardson sent a volley over before Whitfield crossed for Bird, whose effort was gathered by Firth, but the Altrincham goalkeeper was beaten for a second time in the 74th minute.
Whitfield created the opening himself, twisting inside the penalty area before finding the net from an angle to complete Boreham Wood’s turnaround and put the hosts ahead for the first time.
Danny Cashman replaced Richardson in the 81st minute and the substitute completed the scoring eight minutes later. Whitfield released Cashman, who controlled the ball before poking his finish beyond Firth to make it 3-1 and secure Boreham Wood’s fifth successive league victory.
The result leaves Boreham Wood as the National League’s only unbeaten side after 12 matches, with 10 wins, two draws and 32 points. They ended Saturday seven points clear of second-placed Harrogate Town, while the club’s unbeaten run in all competitions has now stretched to six months.
Altrincham’s defeat ended a four-match winning sequence in which Neil Gibson’s side had beaten Hartlepool United, AFC Fylde, Hornchurch and Gateshead. The Robins remain sixth with 21 points from their opening 12 league matches.
