The VBS Community Stadium played host to a pulsating English National League encounter, where Altrincham secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sutton United. In a match characterised by relentless attacking intent, it was the visitors who ultimately prevailed, with Oliver Crankshaw netting a brace to cancel out Jermaine Francis’s early opener.
Sutton United started the brighter of the two sides, looking to impose themselves. Their early pressure paid dividends in the 19th minute when Jermaine Francis found the back of the net, giving the home side a deserved lead. The goal appeared to settle the U’s, and they controlled possession for a period thereafter, probing for openings but unable to extend their advantage. Altrincham, meanwhile, struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half. Isaac Marriott and Tylor Golden both received yellow cards for fouls within the first 35 minutes, highlighting their frustration.
The second half witnessed a significant shift in momentum. Altrincham, spurred on by their first-half bookings, emerged with renewed vigour. This change in approach began to bear fruit. The breakthrough Altrincham craved arrived in the 70th minute when Oliver Crankshaw levelled the scoreline. The goal visibly lifted the Robins, and they pressed their advantage. Just three minutes later, the turnaround was complete. Substitute Lucas Weaver, who had been introduced in the 62nd minute, provided the assist for Oliver Crankshaw to strike again, securing all three points for the visitors.
The late flurry of goals added a layer of drama to an already engaging contest. Sutton United, despite their initial promise, found themselves chasing the game in the final stages. Chris Agutter’s side attempted to respond, bringing on Danny Cashman in the 74th minute, but Altrincham, now in control, managed the game effectively. Altrincham’s tactical substitutions, including the introduction of Matthew Kosylo and Charlie Kirk, played a part in their second-half resurgence and ability to see out the victory. The visitors also saw Sam Barnes booked in the 81st minute and Lucas Weaver in the 89th, as the game became increasingly stretched.
The result sees Altrincham climb to 14th in the National League standings with 54 points from 45 games, having been in 15th place with 51 points before kick off. Sutton United, meanwhile, remain in 18th place with 47 points from 45 games, a position that has seen them avoid relegation. The victory marks a significant boost for Altrincham, extending their recent winning streak to two matches and continuing their scoring run to three consecutive games, whilst Sutton United’s winless streak now stands at five.
