Charlie Carter scored after just 40 seconds as Sutton United ended a six-match National League winless run with a 2-0 victory over Aldershot Town at The 360 Engage Stadium. David Ogbonna doubled the lead in the 11th minute, but the hosts needed several important saves from Spike Brits to preserve their clean sheet and condemn the Shots to a fifth successive league defeat.
Chris Agutter made four changes following Sutton’s defeat at Harrogate, with Alex Kirk returning from injury and Sam Folarin, Omar Mussa and Joe Knight also coming into the side. Jake Taylor was suspended, while Jordan Moore-Taylor was withdrawn from the starting line-up shortly before kick-off after failing to recover from the injury he sustained on Saturday.
Despite that late disruption, Sutton took the lead almost immediately. Aldershot hesitated in possession inside their own penalty area and Carter reacted quickest, forcing the ball past goalkeeper Nick Hayes before rolling it into the net with a defender attempting to recover. The goal arrived with only 40 seconds played.
Aldershot thought they had equalised when Michee Efete powered a header into the net from a free-kick, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside. Sutton then doubled their advantage in the 11th minute when Emmanuel Osadebe collected possession in midfield and released Ogbonna down the left. The forward advanced into the area and finished low beyond Hayes.
The visitors had an unusual opportunity to reduce the deficit when Brits picked up the ball after Kirk had been judged to have taken a goal kick, resulting in an indirect free-kick inside Sutton’s six-yard area. Referee Sunny Singh Gill positioned the home defensive wall on the goal-line, and Brody Peart’s effort was blocked.
Aldershot came close again when Basil Tuma arrived to meet Ollie Harfield’s cross, but his header struck the crossbar. Sutton nevertheless retained their two-goal advantage at half-time, having capitalised on their early opportunities while the visitors were unable to convert theirs.
Aldershot manager Scott Davies made three changes at the interval, introducing Conor Lawless, Tristan Abrahams and Anisius Lewis, while Agutter replaced the booked Knight with Charlie Bell. The visitors created the better early second-half openings, with Lawless forcing Brits into a good save from distance before Efete shot straight at the Sutton goalkeeper.
Lewis then missed an opportunity to bring Aldershot back into the match after Kirk misdirected a header into his path, sending his effort wide from close range. Sutton threatened at the other end when Ogbonna narrowly failed to reach a low cross from Folarin, while Hayes later produced an important save from Jermaine Francis, who had moved further forward during the closing stages.
Aldershot had one final chance to reduce the deficit in stoppage time when substitute Jack Matton met a delivery with a downward header, but Brits produced an excellent save to preserve Sutton’s clean sheet. The hosts held on to secure their first league victory since beating Eastleigh on 15 September.
The result moved Sutton to 21 points from 15 National League matches and ended a sequence of three defeats and three draws. Aldershot remained on 18 points after a fifth consecutive league defeat, while Sutton extended their unbeaten home league record against the Hampshire club.
