Harrogate Town welcome Eastleigh on Saturday afternoon for a National League fixture between two sides separated by just two points after the opening nine matches. Harrogate begin the weekend fifth with 16 points, while Eastleigh sit 12th on 14 points and could move level with their hosts with a victory.
Harrogate enjoyed an excellent run through late August and early September, recording three successive league victories. A 2-1 home win over Gateshead was followed by a 2-0 victory away at Scunthorpe United before Simon Weaver’s side beat Tamworth 3-1 at home to move onto 16 points from their opening seven fixtures.
That momentum has been checked by successive defeats. Fylde won 2-1 at Harrogate before league leaders Boreham Wood produced a 4-1 victory at Meadow Park last weekend. Bailey Hobson gave Harrogate an early lead in that contest, but Boreham Wood responded with four unanswered goals to inflict a third league defeat of the season on the visitors.
Despite those setbacks, Harrogate have been one of the National League’s most productive attacking sides. They have scored in all nine league matches this season, finding the net 20 times in total. Their opening nine fixtures have produced 36 goals at both ends, with Harrogate scoring at least twice in six of those matches.
Eastleigh arrive having returned to winning ways with a 1-0 home victory over Carlisle United last weekend. Aaron Blair scored the decisive goal shortly before half-time, while the Spitfires defended their advantage after the break to end a four-match winless league run.
Matt Gray’s side have experienced mixed results recently. A 1-1 draw with Aldershot Town was followed by a 2-1 defeat at Altrincham before Eastleigh earned a point from a 1-1 home draw with unbeaten league leaders Boreham Wood. They then lost 2-1 at Sutton United before responding with last weekend’s victory over Carlisle.
Eastleigh have nevertheless remained competitive throughout the opening weeks of the campaign. Their nine league matches have produced four wins, two draws and three defeats, with 11 goals scored and 10 conceded. They have also scored in each of their last four National League fixtures, although three of those matches produced only a single Eastleigh goal.
Saturday’s fixture will be the first league meeting between Harrogate Town and Eastleigh since Harrogate’s return to the National League this season. With no recent head-to-head record between the clubs, the encounter brings together two sides approaching the weekend from different directions in terms of recent results.
