In a pulsating encounter at Roots Hall, Southend United secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Braintree Town in the English National League. The Shrimpers established a commanding three-goal lead, only for a spirited Braintree comeback to set up a tense finale.
Southend United started brightly and took an early lead in the sixth minute. Andy Dallas opened the scoring for the home side with a strike. Dallas then doubled his tally and Southend’s advantage in the 33rd minute, this time latching onto a pass from Sam Austin. The second goal seemed to put Southend firmly in control, and they extended their lead further in the 54th minute. Oliver Coker found the back of the net, assisted by James Golding, to make it 3-0 and seemingly put the game beyond doubt.
However, Braintree Town refused to lie down. Their fightback began in the 69th minute when Ryan Battrum pulled one back, with the assist coming from substitute Manny Omrore. The introduction of Omrore and fellow substitute Sahid Kamara in the 67th minute appeared to inject a new urgency into the visitors’ play. Kamara then completed a remarkable turnaround in scoring for Braintree, netting in the 83rd minute, assisted by Battrum, to reduce the deficit to a single goal and ensure a nervy finish for the home supporters.
Despite Braintree’s late surge and sustained pressure, Southend United held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points. The victory sees Southend United maintain their seventh-place position in the National League table with 68 points from 40 matches, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. Braintree Town, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, occupying 23rd place with 35 points from 42 games.
