In a keenly contested encounter at The Jakemans Community Stadium, York City secured a vital 1-0 victory over Boston United, thanks to a second-half strike from Ben Brookes. The solitary goal proved decisive, earning Stuart Maynard’s side a crucial three points.
The opening period was a tightly fought affair, with both teams demonstrating strong defensive organisation. Boston United, managed by Paul Hurst, endeavoured to control possession and press their opponents, but York City’s midfield proved effective in disrupting their build-up play and stifling any clear-cut chances. The visitors, in turn, looked to create openings, testing the Boston defence. Referee Andrew Miller’s first half was largely uneventful, with the only notable incident being a yellow card for Jeff King of York City in the 40th minute following a foul.
The second half commenced with increased intensity from both sides, and it was York City who broke the deadlock just three minutes after the restart. Ben Brookes found the net to give his team the lead, a goal that visibly boosted York’s confidence and control of the game.
In an effort to find an equaliser, Boston United introduced Jordy Hiwula-Mayifuila in place of Luca Barrington in the 68th minute. Paul Hurst continued to make changes, bringing on Dylan Hill, Tom Cursons, Greg Sloggett, and Arjan Raikhy in subsequent substitutions. Greg Sloggett had previously been cautioned with a yellow card in the 55th minute for a foul. Despite their efforts and the introduction of fresh impetus, Boston United found it difficult to penetrate a resolute York defence.
York City, with the advantage, managed the game astutely. Stuart Maynard reinforced his team’s structure with substitutions, introducing Joe Grey and Marcel Lavinier to bolster the defence and midfield. Boston United made a further tactical change in the 78th minute, with Dylan Hill being replaced by defender Tom Cursons. However, they were unable to find a way past York’s organised backline. York also made late changes, with Ollie Banks being replaced by Joe Grey and Connor Teale by Marcel Lavinier. Greg Sloggett was then substituted for Arjan Raikhy, and Alex Hunt made way for Daniel Batty.
The victory maintains York City’s strong position at the top of the English National League. For Boston United, the result means they remain in mid-table, currently in 15th place with 48 points. This marked their third successive match without a win and a continued challenge in finding the back of the net.
