In a dramatic conclusion at the J. Davidson Stadium, FC Halifax Town snatched a late victory, defeating Altrincham 1-0 in a hard-fought English National League encounter. The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time, courtesy of Jay Turner-Cooke, who was assisted by substitute David Kawa.
The first half was a cagey affair, with neither side able to establish a clear dominance. Referee Melissa Burgin was active early on, issuing a yellow card to Altrincham’s Matthew Kosylo in the 20th minute for a foul. The home side continued to receive bookings, with Isaac Marriott cautioned just six minutes later for a similar infringement. FC Halifax Town also had a player booked, as Shaun Hobson was cautioned in the 36th minute. Despite the physicality, the score remained goalless at the interval.
The second half began in a similar vein, a tactical battle where scoring opportunities were scarce. Altrincham’s Tom Crawford was shown a yellow card in the 57th minute, and FC Halifax Town followed suit with Cody Johnson receiving a booking in the 63rd minute. The game remained deadlocked, with both managers seemingly seeking a tactical advantage. FC Halifax Town introduced substitutions to try and spark their attack. In the 75th minute, Will Hugill was replaced by David Kawa, a change that would prove significant. Later, in the 79th minute, Shaun Hobson made way for Kieron Morris as the visitors looked to bolster their defence. Altrincham also made several changes in the latter stages, bringing on Oliver Crankshaw, Otis Jan Mohammed Khan, Edward Jones, and Jake Cooper as they pressed for a winning goal.
However, it was FC Halifax Town who ultimately found the breakthrough in the final moments. In the 94th minute, with the match heading into stoppage time, Jay Turner-Cooke found the back of the net to give his side the lead. The assist was provided by David Kawa, who had entered the field of play in the 75th minute, underscoring the impact of tactical substitutions. The late goal erupted joy amongst the travelling Halifax supporters and left the home crowd stunned.
This late strike proved to be the only goal of the game, consigning Altrincham to a home defeat. The result sees FC Halifax Town strengthen their position in the top half of the English National League table, currently occupying 8th place with 65 points from 42 matches. Altrincham remain in mid-table, sitting in 16th place with 48 points from the same number of games. This victory will undoubtedly provide a significant boost for FC Halifax Town as their campaign continues.
