Southend United secured a vital three points in a pulsating encounter at Roots Hall, overcoming a spirited Rochdale side with a 3-2 victory. The Shrimpers, aiming to climb the English National League table and solidify their position amongst the playoff contenders, started the brighter of the two sides.
Their early dominance was rewarded in the third minute when Andy Dallas found the back of the net to give the home side a dream start. Southend United doubled their advantage in the 17th minute through James Golding, who extended their lead to 2-0. However, Rochdale demonstrated their resilience. Just three minutes later, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe pulled one back for the visitors, assisted by Daniel Moss, to inject renewed hope into the away team.
The see-saw nature of the first half continued as Southend United restored their two-goal cushion in the 27th minute. Tom Hopper was the scorer, ensuring his side went into the break with a comfortable 3-1 lead.
The second half saw Rochdale emerge with a clear intent to fight back. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Casey Pettit reduced the deficit to 3-2, setting up a tense final period.
Southend United made several tactical substitutions in the latter stages of the game, introducing Oliver Coker, Charley Kendall, and Slavi Spasov to shore up their defence and try to see out the victory. Rochdale also made changes, bringing on Ian Henderson and Ed Francis as they pressed for an equaliser.
Despite Rochdale’s late surge and a flurry of pressure, Southend United held firm to secure a crucial three points. The victory sees Southend United maintain their pursuit of the playoff places, currently sitting in seventh position with 61 points after 36 matches. Rochdale, meanwhile, remain at the summit of the National League, having accumulated 91 points from 38 games prior to this fixture.
