Southend United secured a vital three points on Saturday afternoon, overcoming Forest Green Rovers with a disciplined 2-0 victory at Roots Hall. The Shrimpers established an early lead and added a second in the second half to seal a deserved win.
The home side were ahead within the opening minutes. Just three minutes into the contest, James Golding opened the scoring for Southend United, with Harry Boyes providing the assist. This early breakthrough set the tone for the match.
Despite the early setback, Forest Green Rovers attempted to find their rhythm, but Southend United’s defensive organisation proved resolute. The Shrimpers’ backline limited the visitors’ clear-cut opportunities throughout the first half. Gus Scott-Morriss, who would later find the net himself, picked up a yellow card in the 16th minute for a foul.
The second half saw Forest Green Rovers make a series of tactical adjustments in a bid to find an equaliser. Manager Robbie Savage introduced Tre Pemberton in the 64th minute, replacing Ashqar Ahmed. Further attacking impetus was sought with the introduction of Jose Marquez and Nick Haughton shortly after, as well as Gabriel Kircough in midfield. However, these changes failed to unlock the Southend defence.
The decisive moment arrived in the 72nd minute when Gus Scott-Morriss doubled Southend United’s advantage. Oliver Coker was credited with the assist for Scott-Morriss’s goal, effectively putting the game beyond doubt for the hosts.
Southend United, currently sitting in eighth place in the English National League table with 58 points from 35 games, will be pleased with this result as they aim to maintain their push for a play-off spot. Forest Green Rovers, meanwhile, remain fifth with 65 points from 38 games, having played two more matches than Southend. The defeat marks a missed opportunity for Rovers to climb higher in the tightly contested league standings.
