Roots Hall played host to a hard-fought encounter on Tuesday evening, where Southend United and Gateshead ultimately shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the English National League.
The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute when Southend United took the lead. Harry Boyes provided a well-placed pass to Andy Dallas, who made no mistake in converting the opportunity to put the home side ahead. The Shrimpers pressed for a second goal before the interval.
However, Gateshead, who had been largely on the defensive for much of the first half, found an equaliser moments before the half-time whistle. In the 45th minute, Bradley Nicholson struck for the visitors, levelling the score at 1-1. The crucial assist came from Keaton Ward. This late goal ensured that both teams entered the dressing rooms with the scoreline balanced.
The second half saw tactical adjustments from both dugouts. In the 62nd minute, Southend United manager Kevin Maher introduced Keenan Appiah-Forson and James Morton in midfield, replacing Oliver Coker and Cavanagh Miley respectively. Gateshead also looked to their bench for impact; in the 66th minute, Rob Elliot brought on Levi Amantchi for Billy Chadwick, and Josh Home replaced Sam Bowen in midfield.
Despite these tactical interventions, neither side could find a decisive breakthrough. Southend United made further substitutions, with Gus Scott-Morriss making way for Jack Bridge in the 74th minute, and Andy Dallas being replaced by Tom Hopper. Gateshead continued to probe, but resolute defending and a lack of cutting edge in the final third meant the score remained level.
The match saw a yellow card issued to Gateshead’s Kenton Richardson in the 35th minute for a foul. James Golding of Southend United also received a caution in the 84th minute for a similar offence.
The draw leaves Southend United in eighth place in the National League standings with 55 points from 34 games, while Gateshead remain in 23rd place with 33 points from 36 games.
