The Shay Stadium played host to a pulsating English National League fixture as FC Halifax Town clinched a hard-earned 2-1 victory against Altrincham. In a contest characterised by attacking intent from both teams, it was the home side that ultimately secured the vital three points, driven by a strong second-half performance.
The initial period was a cautious affair, with neither side able to impose significant control. Despite some exploratory attacks, clear-cut opportunities were a rarity. Altrincham’s Matthew Kosylo received a caution for a foul shortly before half-time, an indication of the increasing intensity.
The breakthrough arrived in the 49th minute. FC Halifax Town’s sustained pressure was rewarded when Josh Hmami found the net, giving his team the lead and injecting a welcome sense of urgency into the match. However, Altrincham reacted promptly and effectively. Just six minutes later, Oliver Crankshaw equalised at 1-1, his goal assisted by Edward Jones, showcasing the visitors’ resilience and attacking capability.
The momentum then shifted back towards the home team. A tactical change saw substitute Will Hugill, who had entered the fray in the tenth minute, make a notable contribution. In the 64th minute, Hugill scored the decisive goal for FC Halifax Town, restoring their advantage and ultimately proving to be the match-winner.
The latter stages of the game saw Altrincham pressing for an equaliser, prompting a series of substitutions from both dugouts as managers sought to impact the result. Despite their efforts, Altrincham were unable to breach the Halifax defence, and referee Zac Kennard-Kettle eventually signalled the end of the engaging contest.
This victory sees FC Halifax Town strengthen their standing in the upper half of the National League table. They currently occupy 8th place with 35 points from 24 games, with this, their tenth win of the season, bringing them closer to the playoff positions. Altrincham, having played the same number of games, remain in 16th place on 26 points and will be looking to regroup and regain form in their forthcoming matches.
